31.10.10 Same Sex Wards for City Hospital: City Hospital in Winson Green will make structural alterations costing around £1.5 million in order to create same sex wards.

31.10.10 Armed Robbery at TGI Fridays: TGI Fridays on Newhall Walk in Sutton Coldfield was robbed at around 11.30pm on Wednesday 13 October. Staff leaving the premises after closing time were threatened by thieves; a female employee was forced to open the safe.

31.10.10 Car Hits Tree in Erdington: A car crashed into a tree on New Sutton Road in Erdington at 3am on Friday 29 October. The vehicle was being pursued by police shortly before the crash; the driver was seriously injured; two male passengers fled the scene.

30.10.10 Diwali Celebrations at NIA: Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, will be celebrated tomorrow at the National Indoor Arena from 2pm to 8pm; around 10,000 visitors are expected; there will be stalls, exhibitions, art, dancing, live music, traditional vegetarian cuisine and fireworks.

30.10.10 New Asda for Woodgate? Asda wish to build a 24-hour superstore on the former site of the RSPCA Hospital and adjoining All Electric Garage off Barnes Hill in Woodgate. The proposed development will also include three acres of Woodgate Valley Country Park.

30.10.10 King Edward Moves to Centenary Square: A statue of King Edward VII will be installed outside Baskerville House on Centenary Square on 3rd November. The statue, which was made by Albert Toft in 1913, has been restored at a cost of £114,000; it stood in Victoria Square until 1951 and in Highgate Park from 1951 until 2009.

29.10.10 Birmingham Beer Festival This Weekend: The three-day Birmingham Beer Festival, organised by CAMRA, starts today at the Second City Suite on Sherlock Street in Southside; 5,500 visitors are expected; there will be food stalls, live music sets, more than 200 ales and 50 ciders and perries.

29.10.10 Boy Hit by Car in Spring Hill: A 12 year-old boy was hit by a car on Spring Hill in Hockley at roughly 1.45pm on Thursday 28 October; he has been hospitalised with serious head injuries.

29.10.10 Asylum Seeker Killed Her Own Daughter: A jury at Birmingham Crown Court has decided that a 25-year-old woman from Somalia unlawfully killed her daughter at their home on Milverton Road in Erdington in February 2010; the woman, who suffers from schizophrenia, was deemed unfit to plead to a charge of murder and has been detained in a secure psychiatric hospital.

29.10.10 Robbers Steal Yenton Pub Takings: Two men wearing hoodies stole the takings from the Yenton pub at knifepoint at roughly 9am on Monday 11 October; they held up an employee who was leaving the pub by the back door in order to bank the cash.

 29.10.10 Armed Gang Raid Pub in Garretts Green: A gang of six men armed with guns and knives raided the Dovecote public house in Garretts Green at around 7.30pm on Saturday 9 October; they stole money from the tills and forced customers to hand over cash and valuables.

28.10.10 Erdington Pub Must Close Earlier: The Licensing Committee has ruled that the Acorn on Erdington High Street, which is owned by Total Pub Solutions, must close at midnight instead of 1am; police have been called to the premises 46 times during the past 12 months.

28.10.10 New Performing Arts Centre for Edgbaston: A new £7.1 million performing arts centre will be shared by King Edward School and King Edward VI High School for Girls in Edgbaston. Work should begin in November 2010 and be complete by spring 2012. The centre will contain a 400-seat concert hall, drama studio, teaching and rehearsal rooms.

28.10.10 Council Airport Stake Valued at £67 Million: Birmingham City Council owns an 18.6% stake in Birmingham Airport which it has valued at £67 million; it is one of seven West Midlands councils that collectively hold a 49% stake; 48.2% is owned by two private investors: the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and Victorian Funds Management Corporation; 2.8% belongs to an employee trust.

28.10.10 Work Continues at Edgbaston Cricket Ground: The £32 million regeneration of Edgbaston Cricket Ground is continuing during the close season; the project includes a new stand, a conference and banqueting suite for up to 700 guests, executive boxes, corporate and member facilities; the ground capacity will be increased to 25,000.

27.10.10 Bishop of Birmingham Enters House of Lords: The C of E Bishop of Birmingham, the Reverend David Urquhart, has taken a seat in the House of Lords. The Bishop has waited since his appointment in 2006 for a vacancy; apart from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and the Bishops of London, Durham and Winchester, only the 21 longest-serving bishops may sit in the Lords.

27.10.10 M6 Upgrade Approved: The Transport Secretary has approved the introduction of hi-tech shoulder running between junction 5 and junction 8 of the M6 so that vehicles travelling between Castle Vale and Walsall may use the hard shoulder as an additional lane during peak periods.

27.10.10 Film Crews in Ladywood: Filming for the BBC TV series Hustle took place at the Biddle and Webb auction house off Ladywood Middleway on Tuesday 26 October; the cast included Arian Lester and Robert Vaughan.

27.10.10 Bus Crashes into Cars on the Birchfield Road: A number 46 bus crashed into four parked cars on the A34 Birchfield Road, near to the One Stop Shopping Centre, at around 11pm on Saturday 23 October; nobody was injured; the driver may have been distracted by a violent passenger.

27.10.10 Firefighters Ambushed in Stechford: A gang of youths, hiding in bushes on the Stechford Lane, threw a brick through the windscreen of a fire engine at around 8pm on Sunday 24 October. The crew had just extinguished a bin fire that may have been started by the youths.

26.10.10 Cannabis Farm Discovered in Aston Pub: An 18-year-old youth cultivated cannabis in loft space above his room at the Vine pub on the Lichfield Road in Aston; police raided the pub on 2 June 2010; the youth received a six month suspended prison sentence at Birmingham Crown Court.

26.10.10 Council Provides Expertise to Abu Dhabi: The Council Leader Mike Whitby has negotiated an agreement with the government of Abu Dhabi: the council will provide local government expertise in return for which Abu Dhabi will promote Birmingham as a business destination for government-backed investors in the Gulf states.

26.10.10 Walmley Housing Development Deferred: A planned new housing development on the Hardy Spicer playing fields in Walmley has been deferred. Residents oppose the construction of a £3.3 million YMCA community centre and 110 houses.

25.10.10 DJ Battered by Party Hosts: A 23-year-old man and 30-year-old woman from Wildfell Road in Accoks Green battered a DJ whom they had hired for a private party after the booking was cancelled at short notice; both were jailed for 2 years at Birmingham Crown Court.

25.10.10 Small Heath Man Jailed for Dog Cruelty: Birmingham Magistrates have jailed a 29-year-old man from St Benedict's Road in Small Heath for 12 weeks for animal cruelty; the man kept three fighting dogs: two pit bulls and one Staffordshire bull terrier; all had multiple untreated wounds.

25.10.10 Car Crash on Wake Green Road: Three men were hospitalised after a car crashed into a hedge on Wake Green Road in Moseley at around 2.30am on Saturday 23 October.

24.10.10: Birmingham Half Marathon Today: 14,650 people participated in the 3rd Birmingham Half Marathon which started at 9am this morning. The 13.1 mile course ran from the city centre through Edgbaston, Stirchley, Cotteridge and Bournville before doubling back through Lee Bank to Broad Street. There were live bands and choirs at mile intervals and Heart FM entertained the crowds on Centenary Square, next to the finishing line.

24.10.10 Police Target Bus Fare Dodgers: Police caught 129 fare dodgers on bus routes 14, 55, and 94, which run through the Washwood Heath corridor, on Wednesday 20 October.

24.10.10 MP's Wife Accused of Burglary: Christine Hemming, wife of Liberal Democrat MP for Yardley John Hemming, has been charged with burglary. She is alleged to have broken into the Moseley home of her husband's mistress and stolen a kitten at around 7.45pm on Wednesday 29 September.

23.10.10 Broad Street Casino Refurbishment: The Grosvenor Casino on Broad Street in Five Ways will reopen as the G Casino following a £1.2 million refurbishment. The refurbished venue will contain 15 gaming tables, 38 electronic gaming terminals, 20 slot machines with a £4,000 jackpot and a 100-seat poker room that will be available for private hire.

23.10.10 Robbers Abduct Teen Bus Passenger: Two men abducted a 16-year-old boy from the upper deck of a number 49 bus as it stopped in Kings Norton at roughly 8pm on Thursday 7 October. They made the boy withdraw £250 from a cashpoint on Pershore Road South and then forced him to accompany them in a taxi to McDonalds on Bordesley Green Road.  

23.10.10 Tuberculosis Risk in Brum: The rate of confirmed cases of tuberculosis is 145 per 100,000 in the Aston ward and 140 per 100,00 in the Lozells and East Handsworth ward. The Department of Health has indicated that the rate should not exceed 40 per 100,000. Pupils at the Sheldon Heath Academy have been screened for tuberculosis after an IT teacher contracted the disease.

22.10.10 Four Oaks Conservation Area Too Restrictive?: An Edwardian villa at 22 Ladywood Road in the Four Oaks Conservation Area was designed in the Arts and Crafts Style by W.H.Bidlake in 1902; however, it was damaged by fire in 2005 and the private developer, who is attempting to rebuild it as a modern home, must apply for retrospective planning permission because he has changed some original features; meanwhile the house remains empty and wrapped in scaffolding.

22.10.10 Planning Permission for Lyndhurst Estate: Planning permission has been granted for the proposed £100 million regeneration of the 1960's Lyndhurst Estate in Erdington. The project, which is being funded by a Private Finance Initiative, will include 316 new houses, a youth centre, a health centre and a public open space. Two of the original seven tower blocks have been demolished and the remaining five will be refurbished.

22.10.10 Sikh Temple Extension Approved: Plans to extend the Singh Sabha Gurdwara Temple on Somerset Road in Handsworth Wood have been approved. The temple, which is a converted pub, will get a new prayer hall, toilets, rooftop dome and entrance. The maximum capacity will be 60 worshippers.

21.10.10 Saint Pauls Club Welcomes Women: The exclusive Saint Pauls Club, which occupies three Georgian buildings on Saint Pauls Square in the Jewellery Quarter, has admitted female members for the first time in its 150 year history; the club has also dropped its jacket and tie rule.

21.10.10 Hall Green Man Robbed Prostitutes: A 29-year-old man from York Road in Hall Green has been jailed for ten years at Birmingham Crown Court for robbing prostitutes at knifepoint; he was part of a gang that posed as clients in order to raid prostitutes working from city centre apartments.

21.10.10 Midland Metro Extension Will Go Ahead: The Chancellor George Osborne has indicated that the £130 million extension of the Midland Metro from Snow Hill to New Street Station will go ahead.

21.10.10 Rat Droppings at Sparkhill Chip Shop: Environmental Health Officers found rat droppings during an inspection of Bob's Fish Bar on the Stratford Road in Sparkhill on 1st October 2009. The shop has been £2,000 for five breaches of food hygiene regulations by Birmingham Magistrates.

21.10.10 New Centre at Weoley Castle Ruin: The ruins of Weoley Castle have been repointed and cleansed as part of a £1.14 million makeover that includes a new education and community centre with viewing areas, classrooms, toilets and a kitchen.

20.10.10 New Centre for Troubled Teens in Newtown: A behaviour support centre for teenagers aged 11-16 who are no longer in mainstream education has opened on the former site of Lucas Industries on Great King Street in Newtown.

20.10.10 Crash on Small Heath Highway: A motorist sustained serious head injuries after his car collided with a fence and lamppost on the A47 Small Heath Highway at roughly 1.25pm on Sunday 17 October.

19.10.10 Ducks Disappear from Queslett Nature Reserve: The Friends of Queslett Nature Reserve in Great Barr have reported an alarming fall in the duck population; they suspect poachers may be responsible.

19.10.10 Legal Threat to Birmingham Ring of Steel: The ring of 200 surveillance cameras in largely Muslim areas of inner east Birmingham may be challenged by Liberty under the European Convention of Human Rights on the basis that they are unlawful intrusive and discriminatory; Liberty has requested an assurance within 14 days that the full surveillance infrastructure will be dismantled.

19.10.10 CCTV Planned for Moseley Village: Funds for the installation of CCTV cameras in Moseley Village have been made available through the Safer Birmingham Partnership. Subject to public consultation, the cameras should be installed by March 2011; they will be mounted on columns and connected to the Birmingham City Council Central Monitoring Centre.

18.10.10 Cashpoint Muggers Target Hodge Hill: A pair of muggers in their early twenties appear to be targeting vulnerable people withdrawing cash from machines in Hodge Hill. On Wednesday 13 October, they snatched a card from a 74-year-old OAP after watching him enter his PIN at a machine on Bromford Lane. However, the pensioner recovered his card after confronting the thieves.

18.10.10 Council Parking Charges Revised: From 8th November, parking meter charges in Birmingham will be reduced from £5.10 to £4.20 for two hours and from £1.30 to £1.20 for 30 minutes; charges for parking in council car parks will generally increase by 3.7%; however, charges for most short stays of up to two hours will be frozen.

18.10.10 Cap on Strip Clubs in Brum: The Licensing Committee will set a limit on the number of lap dancing clubs allowed in Birmingham on 17th November.

17.10.10 Motorcyclist Dies in Weoley Castle Crash: A motorcyclist died after colliding with a car at the junction of Alwold Road and Brinklow Road in Weoley Castle at around 2pm on Saturday 16 October.

17.10.10 Sparkbrook Takeaway Infested With Cockroaches: The 41-year-old owner of Quickfry Chippy on Anderton Road in Sparkbrook has been fined £1,500 by Birmingham Magistrates for breaching food hygiene regulations. Officials, who inspected his premises on 27th October 2009, found them to be filthy, in need of repair, and infested with cockroaches.

16.10.10 Castle Bromwich Jaguar Plant Survives: An internal employee bulletin issued by Jaguar Landrover, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, has confirmed that all three Jaguar factories in the UK, including the Castle Bromwich plant, will remain open until at least 2020.

16.10.10: New Sainsbury's for Erdington?: Sainsbury wishes to build a new foodstore on the current site of the Colliers car dealership on Sutton Road in Erdington. If this project goes ahead, Colliers will relocate to a site on the Tyburn Road that was formerly occupied by Palletine.

15.10.10 Will Castle Bromwich Jaguar Plant Survive?: The Tata Group is negotiating a pay and productivity deal with unions at its Jaguar plant in Castle Bromwich. If terms can be agreed then the plant, which has been threatened with closure for the past twelve months, may remain open.

15.10.10 Stockland Green Youth Centre Approved: Planning permission has been granted for the proposed £5 million youth centre on Slade Road in Erdington. The Council has spent £500,000 on the planning stage but the Coalition Government has withdrawn funding for the construction of the youth centre under the Partnership for Schools Programme; the council is appealing this decision.

15.10.10 Newhall Square Partially Unveiled: The 2.3-acre site of the former Birmingham Science Museum in the Jewellery Quarter is currently being regenerated as Newhall Square: a mixed-use development consisting of a public square flanked by offices, leisure units, exhibition space, a car park and 100-room Travelodge. The £63 million project is nearing completion and the new square is partially open.

14.10.10 Gambling Commission May Close: The Gambling Commission on Victoria Square in central Birmingham may close; if so, its work will be taken over by the National Lottery Commission in London.

14.10.10 Will UK Athletics Moves to Alexander Stadium?: Reports that UK Athletics will move to the Alexander Stadium appear premature since no binding legal agreement has been signed. If the move went ahead, the rent would cover the interest on the debt raised to improve the stadium. However, UK Athletics is apparently considering an alternative move to the Olympic Stadium in London.

13.10.10: New Bowling Alley and Ice Rink in Chinatown: Leisurebox is opening a new leisure complex next to the Arcadian on Pershore Street in the Southside area of central Birmingham. The lower level will contain a restaurant, virtual golf, pool tables, amusements and a 20-lane tenpin bowling alley; the upper level will contain an ice rink.

13.10.10 Bournville Residents Oppose Phone Mast: Local residents are campaigning against the erection of a 13.8 metre mobile phone mast at the junction of Heath Road and Selly Oak Road in Bournville; they argue that the proposed mast will be in full view on a main thoroughfare in a residential area.

12.10.10 Birmingham MP in Shadow Cabinet: The Labour MP for Hodge Hill, Liam Byrne, has been elected to the Shadow Cabinet; he will be Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office.

12.10.10 Leaking Roof at Foundry School: The Foundry Primary School in Winson Green has a leaking roof and the main hall floods after heavy rain. The government has withdrawn emergency funding for repairs and the school, which is attended by 168 pupils, has asked Birmingham City Council for assistance.

12.10.10 Saltley Man Jailed For Murder: A 46-year-old man from Ellesmere Road in Saltley, who stabbed and killed his neighbour in a drunken brawl on 15th March 2009, has been jailed for life at Birmingham Crown Court; he must serve a minimum of 14 years.

11.10.10 Another Takeaway for Glebe Farm: A 5th takeaway is to open on the shopping parade on Kitts Green Road in Glebe Farm; this parade, which has 18 units, already includes 4 takeaways and 1 cafe.

11.10.10 Carjacking in Handsworth Wood: A man was carjacked at his home on Church Lane in Handsworth Wood at around 9.30pm on Sunday 22 August; two thieves forced him to hand over the keys to his grey Volkswagen Golf which was parked on the driveway; the police have been unable to trace the vehicle or apprehend the thieves.

11.10.10 Revamp of Holly Hill Shopping Centre: Work has started on the revamp of the Holly Hill Shopping Centre in New Frankley. The £1.2 million project will include new lighting, signage, CCTV, landscaping, a car park with disabled access and a multi-use games area.

10.10.10 Man Battered in Gas Street Pub: A man was battered at the Havana Panama and Cuva Bar on Gas Street in the Westside area of central Birmingham at around 2:40am on Saturday 11 September; he was attacked by a gang of around eight men and part of his ear was cut off; the bar did not report the assault to the police and its license has been suspended.

10.10.10 Council Reorganises Neighbourhood Offices Birmingham City Council has saved £2.3 million by reorganising its neighbourhood office network; there were formerly 28 neighbourhood offices where people could make claims and enquiries but this has been reduced to 13 customer service centres and nine smaller offices. Some areas no longer have a neighbourhood office and residents are being encouraged to deal with the council by phone or online.

09.10.10 Car Crashes into House in Walmley: A stolen car crashed into the garage of a house on Walmley Ash Road at around 5am on Friday 8 October; the driver has been arrested.

09.10.10 Man Jailed for Colmore Row Knife Attack: A 19-year-old man from Aston has been jailed indefinitely at Birmingham Crown Court for stabbing a pest control officer on Colmore Row who refused to give him a cigarette; he must serve a minimum of 3 years 9 months.

09.10.10 Council Will No Longer House Asylum Seekers: Birmingham City Council will not renew its contract with the UK Border Agency for the provision of council housing to asylum seekers. The council provides 190 homes under the current five year contract which expires in June 2011. This decision has been made in the context of increased homelessness in Birmingham; there are currently 30,000 applicants on the council housing list.

08.10.10 Brothelkeepers Lose Council House: Birmingham City Council has obtained a court order for the eviction of a 42-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman who have apparently been using a three-bedroom council house on All Saints Road in Hockley as a brothel.

08.10.10 New Health Centre for Alum Rock: The site of the new Washwood Heath Health and Wellbeing Centre has been visited by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley. The £15 million centre, currently under construction off Alum Rock Road, will provide GP services, physiotherapy, orthopaedic triage, diagnostic, community and urgent care to 15,000 patients.

07.10.10 Dead Body in Ward End Park: The corpse of an 18-year-old man was found in undergrowth in Ward End Park at roughly 1pm on Tuesday 5 October.

07.10.10 Power Cut in Birmingham City Centre: 20,168 homes and businesses in Birmingham city centre were today deprived of electricity during a 14 minute blackout that lasted from 12.23 pm until 12.37pm.

07.10.10 Tributes Stolen From Kings Norton Cemetery: Flowers and a flag have been stolen from the grave of a 62-year-old grandmother who was buried seven weeks ago in Kings Norton Cemetery.

06.10.10 Firearms Officers Join Anti-Gun Campaign: Police firearms officers will enter Birmingham schools to explain the grim reality of gun and knife crime. They will be accompanied by Marcia Shakespeare whose 17-year-old daughter Letisha was shot dead outside a hair salon in Aston in January 2003.

06.10.10 Nun Assists Refugees on Shadwell Street: A nun of the Roman Catholic Order of Infant Jesus Sisters has opened a centre for refugees and asylum seekers in a Salvation Army building on Shadwell Street in the Gun Quarter. The centre, known as St Chad's Sanctuary, is staffed by 26 volunteers; it serves hot drinks and distributes clothing, shoes, hygiene products and food parcels.

05.10.10 Memorial Service for Gun & Knife Crime Victims: The 8th annual church service in memory of victims of gun and knife crime in Birmingham, organised by Families for Peace, will be held at St Martins in the Bulllring at 11am on Saturday 16 October 2010.

05.10.10 Colston Primary Care Centre Approved: A new five storey health centre on Bath Row in the Lee Bank area of Attwood Green has been approved. The centre will provide health services for over 16,000 patients; there were fears that it would be too large and that only part of this capacity would be required. However, a new report suggests that 81% of the building will be used and that local demand for health services will increase dramatically over the next few years.

05.10.10 Library of Birmingham will be Charitable Trust: The £187 million Library of Birmingham, which is currently under construction in Centenary Square, will be assigned to a charitable trust so that it can claim financial relief not otherwise available.

05.10.10 Nightclub Brawl in Sutton Coldfield: The police were called to the Reflex Club on Lower Parade in Sutton Coldfield at around 3.30am on Sunday 3 October; upon their arrival two gangs totalling around 30 men, who had apparently been brawling, rapidly dispersed.

04.10.10 Tories Announce New High Speed Rail Plans: The Conservative Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond has announced plans to extend the proposed high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham north-westwards to Manchester and north-eastwards to Leeds. These plans include proposals for a new station at Curzon Street in Birmingham Eastside and a parkway interchange with 40,000 vehicle spaces at Birmingham Airport. 

04.10.10 Art Bar Opens at Central Methodist Hall: The Q Club at the Central Methodist Hall on Corporation Street has opened an art bar that will host a new exhibition every month.

04.10.10 Stations Unmanned On Cross City Line: According to the Campaign for Better Transport, the 23 stations on the Cross City Line between Redditich and Lichfield (16 of which are in Birmingham) are rarely staffed in the evening and are regularly unmanned, sometimes for up to three days at a time.

03.10.10 New Fashion Concession at House of Fraser: The fashion label Planet, which is part of the Jacques Vert Group and specialises in clothing for professional women, has opened a concession at the House of Fraser on Corporation Street.

03.10.10 Drive By Shooting in Stechford: A 34 year-old man was shot in the head and groin outside his home on Albert Road in Stechford at around 8.30pm on Thursday 30 September. He appears to have been targeted by a gang armed with a shotgun who were cruising through the area in two vehicles.

03.10.10 Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Handsworth: Ambulance crews discovered a man, woman, and boy suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning at a house on Copthall Road in Handsworth at around 10.30pm on Thursday 30 September; all three were hospitalised.

02.10.10 Bus Hits Toddler in Druids Heath: A three-year-old boy was hit by a bus on Bells Lane in Druids Heath at around 9.30am on Friday 1 October. He has been hospitalised with a broken leg.

02.10.10 Handsworth Knifeman Jailed for 22 Years: A 32-year-old man has been jailed for 22 years for attempted murder at Birmingham Crown Court; he stabbed his 49-year-old landlord, to whom he owed rent, at his landlord's off-licence on Albert Road in Handsworth on 2 March 2010.

02.10.10 New Council Homes for Balsall Heath: The Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust is currently completing 33 houses on a site off the Pershore Road in Balsall Heath; the project received a £1.79 million subsidy from the Homes and Communities Agency. The first tenants have already been handed the keys to their new four bedroom energy-efficient house.

02.10.10 Legal Ombudsman Opens in Birmingham: The national headquarters of the Legal Ombudsman, a statutory body created to investigate complaints against lawyers, will open at Baskerville House on Centenary Square next week; the total staff is estimated at around 350.

02.10.10 Man Stabbed in Newtown: A 22 year-old man is in a stable condition after being stabbed in the vicinity of Guild Croft in Newtown at around 10pm on Tuesday 28 September.

02.10.10 Sikh Free Schools Approved: The Education Secretary Michael Gove has approved plans by the Guru Nanak Nishkam Educational Trust for a free Sikh primary school on the Soho Road in Handsworth and a free Sikh secondary school at the former Lucas Works on Great King Street in Hockley. The schools may prefer Sikh pupils for 50% of all places; the remaining 50% will be available regardless of religion.

01.10.10 Fighting Dogs Seized in Small Heath: The keeper of two pit bull terriers and a Staffordshire bull terrier, both with fighting scars, which were seized from a house on St Benedict's Road in Small Heath, has pleaded guilty to offences under the Dangerous Dogs Act and Animal Welfare Act at Birmingham Magistrates Court.

01.10.10 Man Arrested After Paradise Circus Siege: Police closed Paradise Circus during a 29 hour siege that began at 4pm on Wednesday 29 September when a man threatened to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. He was finally overpowered and arrested for public nuisance offences at 8:45 pm on Thursday 30 September.

01.10.10 Police Apology Regarding Ring of Steel: An independent review by Thames Valley Police with regard to a partially covert ring of 200 surveillance cameras in the mainly Muslim areas of inner East Birmingham, has concluded that there was a lack of consultation and transparency of purpose prior to their installation. Chris Sims, the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, has apologised for these "serious shortcomings" and their "negative impact" on local communities.

01.10.10: Work Begins on Eastside City Park: Work has started on the creation of City Park in the Eastside area of central Birmingham. The new eight acre linear park will create a green space linking Moor Street, Masshouse, Millennium Point, Curzon Gate and the Digbeth Branch Canal. The project will cost £13 million and should be completed by 2013.
