30.11.10 Woman Admits Turves Green Burglary: A 24-year-old woman has pleaded guilty at Birmingham Magistrates Court to stealing a purse and gold ring from a house she burgled on Coney Green Drive in the Turves Green area of Northfield on Saturday 20 November. She was caught by the householder who restrained her until the police arrived. 30.11.10 New Midland Metro Bridge Installed: A new bridge has been installed above Great Charles Street Queensway as part of the planned extension to the Midland Metro. The bridge will carry the extended Midland Metro from its current terminus at Snow Hill Station to a newly-built viaduct from where it will continue to New Street Station via Upper Bull Street and Corporation Street. 30.11.10: Woman Charged with Body in Bath Murder: A 29-year-old woman from Handsworth has been charged with the murder of a 49-year-old woman who was discovered dead in the bath at her home on Lench's Green in Balsall Heath at approximately 6pm on Wednesday 24 November. 29.11.10 Cyclist Dies in Erdington Crash: A 22-year-old cyclist was hit by two cars at the junction of Wilton Road and Sutton New Road in Erdington at roughly 9.10pm on Friday 26 November. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 29.11.10 New Community Sports Hub in Perry Barr: The Holford Drive Playing Fields in Perry Barr will be redeveloped as a community sports hub available for the use of local sports clubs and managed by a charitable trust. New pitches and changing rooms will be provided. 29.11.10 Hitman Accomplice Jailed for 5 Years: A 20-year-old man has been jailed for 5 years for possession of a firearm with intent; he and another unidentified hitman chased their intended victim through a takeaway on King Edward Road in Ladywood at roughly 8pm on Tuesday 18 May. A shot fired inside the takeaway hit a fridge. 28.11.10 Shop Robbery Death in Kingstanding: A 48-year-old man was fatally stabbed during an apparent robbery at the Select Convenience Store on College Road in Kingstanding at around 9pm on Saturday 27 November. A man and woman, both in their twenties, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. 28.11.10 High Mortality Rates at QE Edgbaston: According to the Dr Foster Hospital Guide, University Hospitals Birmingham, which manages the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston, recorded significantly high death after surgery and hospital standardised mortality rates in 2009-10. 27.11.10 Council Tests Cemetery Headstones: It appears that Birmingham City Council are checking whether the headstones in Birmingham's cemeteries are safe by hiring a contractor to apply 25 kg of force to each one. If a stone topples over, it is apparently strapped to a wooden stake or left flat on the ground. The relatives of the deceased are then asked to pay for repairs. 27.11.10 Flat Fire in Erdington: Fire gutted the living room of a ground floor flat on Alleyne Grove in the Gravelly Hill area of Erdington at roughly 1.30am on Friday 26 November. The blaze may have been caused by an over-filled ashtray. 26.11.10 Man Battered on Hurst Street: A 20-year-old man was hospitalised with head injuries after he was attacked on Hurst Street in the Southside area of central Birmingham after leaving the Arcadian Centre at roughly 3.30am on Sunday 21 November. 26.11.10 Road Traffic Accident in Edgbaston: A car and motor cycle collided at the junction of Priory Road and the A38 Bristol Road in Edgbaston at roughly 5pm on Sunday 21 November. The motorcyclist was hospitalised with chest, ankle and wrist injuries. 25.11.10 Student Sit-In at Birmingham University: 40 students staged a sit-in on the balcony and in the reception area of the Aston Webb Building on the Edgbaston campus of the University of Birmingham on 24th November 2010. They unfurled banners protesting against increased tuition fees. 25.11.10 Police Investigate Suspicious Death in Acocks Green: The police have opened an investigation into the death of a 35-year-old woman who lived on the Avenue in Acocks Green. She was taken to hospital with head injuries on 13th October and died there on 14th November. 25.11.10 Tesco Will Pay Less Towards Oakland Redevelopment: Birmingham City Council has reduced Tesco's obligation to finance the redevelopment of the Oaklands Playing Fields in Yardley by £300,000. Tesco agreed to make a contribution of around £3 million when it applied to redevelop the Swan Shopping Centre as a superstore in 2002. Planning permission was granted but the project was delayed by eight years because of unrelated legal complications. 24.11.10 Bomb Scare At Good Hope Hospital: The Accident and Emergency department of the Good Hope Hospital on Rectory Road in Sutton Coldfield was cordoned off at around 8.30am on Tuesday 23 November following the discovery of a suspect package. A controlled explosion was carried out in the toilets at around 11am and the department was reopened at 2pm. 24.11.10 Gunman Shoots At Driver on Number 24 Bus: A teenage gunman armed with an air pistol shot seven ball bearing pellets at the driver of a number 24 bus in Quinton at around noon on Wednesday 6 October. The driver, who had demanded the correct fare of £1.70, was protected by a safety screen. 24.11.10 Lasan Wins Midlands Best Curry Restaurant Award: The Indian restaurant Lasan on Saint Pauls Square in the Jewellery Quarter has been named Best Curry Restaurant in the Midlands at the British Curry Awards. Two other Indian restaurants in the city centre, Ashas on Newhall Street and Itihaas on Fleet Street, were amongst the four runners-up in the Midlands category. 23.11.10 Moseley Woman Suspected of Murder: A 43-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a man, who appears to have died of a stab wound, was discovered at an address on the Alcester Road on Saturday 20 November. 23.11.10 New Square for Kings Heath High Street: A new landscaped public square with mosaics and Edwardian-style lamps and railings will be created at the corner of Vicarage Road and Kings Heath High Street. A toilet block on the proposed site will be relocated elsewhere on Vicarage Road. 23.11.10 Attempted Robbery At Texaco Four Oaks: A man armed with a handgun attempted to rob the Texaco Service Station on Clarence Road in Four Oaks at around 5.40pm on Wednesday 17 November. He fled empty-handed after the cashier locked himself in a back room. 23.11.10 Teenage Bank Robber Jailed: A 19-year-old youth from Balfour Street in Balsall Heath has been jailed for 5.5 years at Birmingham Crown Court after he admitted robbing a security guard of £25,000 at Lloyds Bank in Weoley Castle on 11th January 2010. 23.11.10 Birmingham Central Library Will Be Demolished: The Friends of Birmingham Central Library have failed to persuade Heritage Minister John Penrose to reverse an order for its demolition as part of a £600 million redevelopment of Paradise Circus. 23.11.10 Warehouse Fire in Alum Rock: A two-storey carpet warehouse on Hancock Road in the Alum Rock area of east Birmingham partially collapsed after flames ripped through its roof at around 5am on Monday 22 November. 22.11.10 Balsall Heath Residents Complain of Accident Blackspot: The Mary Street Residents Association has organised a roadside protest against the continued failure to install traffic calming measures at an accident blackspot by the junction of Edward Road, Hallam Street and Lincoln Street in Balsall Heath. 22.11.10 More Floodlights at Four Oaks Tennis Club: Four Oaks Tennis Club, which currently has three illuminated courts, has been granted permission to install floodlights on two more courts. 22.11.10 New Tesco Superstore to Open in Hockley: A new Tesco superstore will open on Camden Street in Hockley on Monday 6 December. It will create 223 full and part-time jobs and 45 temporary Christmas jobs. Over 1,500 applications have been received. 22.11.10 Small Heath Vehicle Yard Approved: The demolition contactor Smalldene has obtained permission to build a new vehicle yard on Armoury Road in Small Heath despite objections from Orange who own a nearby switch station and claim that its equipment could be damaged by passing lorries. 22.11.10 Suspected Arson in Selly Oak: Police are investigating a suspected arson attack at a two-storey maisonette on Fladbury Crescent in Selly Oak which was gutted by fire at around 8pm on Thursday 18 November. 21.11.10 Frankfurt Market Opens on Victoria Square: The 10th annual Frankfurt Christmas Market opened in Victoria Square on Thursday 18 November. The market consists of around 180 stalls which will remain open until Thursday 23 December. 21.11.10 Gunfire outside the Dubliner in Digbeth: The police responded to reports of gunfire and disorder outside the Dubliner pub in Digbeth at around 1am on Saturday 20 November. Upon arrival, they discovered a 24-year-old man with an ankle injury. 20.11.10 Public Meeting will Debate Moseley CCTV: A public meeting about the installation of CCTV in Moseley will be held at the Moseley Exchange on the Alcester Road at 7.30pm on Wednesday 24 November. 20.11.10 Education Secretary Visits Coppice Primary School: The Education Secretary Michael Gove visited the Coppice Primary School on Trinity Road in Four Oaks on Friday 19th November. The school, which shares a campus with Langley special school, has recently moved into a new £10 million building. The visit was accompanied by a demonstration against education cuts. 20.11.10 Plane Crash at Birmingham Airport: A light aircraft carrying a liver for transplant crashed at Birmingham Airport at roughly 3.35pm on Friday 19 November. The private Cessna aircraft caught fire after coming off the end of the runway. Two injured men were hospitalised. The airport was closed for around 20 hours and traffic was diverted from the A45. 19.11.10 First Residents Move into Cube: The developers of the £100 million Cube, next to the Mailbox on the Birmingham & Worcester Canal, entered administration in March 2010. Refinancing negotiations failed and so administrators Price Waterhouse & Cooper took over the project and are now completing sales of residential apartments reserved by purchasers before administration: commercial space has also been let, most notably to the Highways Agency which moved 700 employees into the Cube in May. 19.11.10 Carluccios Opens Restaurant in Brindleyplace: The Italian restaurant chain Carluccio's has opened its 56th eatery at Birndleyplace. 19.11.10 Residents Association Fails to Stop Hall Green Flats: The Hall Green Residents Association has failed to prevent a block of ten flats being built in the garden of a bungalow that overlooks the Shire Country Park on Cole Valley Road. 18.11.10 Sparkbrook Residents Complain About Meat Factory: Sparkbrook residents have complained to Birmingham City Council that the Premium Halal Meat and Poultry factory at the old Victoria Works on Fallows Road is operating between 6pm and 7am contrary to planning restrictions. 18.11.10 National Indoor Arena Redesign: The international architects Broadway Malyan have been commissioned to explore the possibility of redesigning the National Indoor Arena in order to create an "exciting and contemporary venue". The redesign would include, in particular, a new concourse, canalside entrance and hospitality areas. 18.11.10 Pure Gym Opens Fitness Centre on Broad Street: The Pure Gym chain will open a 24/7 fitness centre on Broad Street in January 2011. The company has invested £1 million in refurbishing premises formerly occupied by the Tiger Tiger nightclub 18.11.10 Edgbaston Cannabis Farmer Spared Jail: A 20-year-old man who cultivated cannabis at his sister's house on City Road in Edgbaston has been sentenced to a 12 month community order at Birmingham Crown Court. A suspended sentence for a previous similar offence was not activated because he turned himself in after being threatened by a criminal gang. 17.11.10 Bank Robbery in Four Oaks: Four armed men raided the Santander Bank on Lichfield Road in Four Oaks at roughly 6pm on Monday 15 November; they broke into the building, battered a security guard and stole the cash boxes that he was loading into an ATM. 17.11.10 Carjacking at Church Tavern in Perry Barr: A 44-year-old motorist was battered by a gang who stole his BMW 335D sport coupe after following him into the car park of the Church Tavern in Perry Barr on Wednesday 3 November. 17.11.10 Yard of Ale Closes on New Street: The Yard of Ale, a Marstons pub on New Street that was bombed by the IRA in 1974, has closed. 16.11.10 More Patients Move To QE Super Hospital: The QE super hospital opened in Edgbaston in June 2010; the in-patient wards formerly at Selly Oak Hospital have already been transferred there and the wards at the old QE Hospital off Metchley Lane will be transferred this week. Selly Oak Hospital will probably close in November 2011 and the old QE Hospital in 2012. 16.11.10 Travelodge to Open Hotel at NEC: Travelodge will open a 200-room hotel at the NEC in 2011. 16.11.10 Boy Hit by Car in Kingstanding: A 12 year-old boy was hospitalised with serious head injuries after being hit by a car on College Road in Kingstanding at around 4pm on Saturday 13 November. 15.11.10 Industrial Fire in Newtown: Over 40 fire crew attended a blaze at Quality Lighting Design on Bridge Street West in Newtown at around 5:45am this morning. 15.11.10 Moseley Somerfield Transformed into Co-Op: The Somerfield store on the Alcester Road in Moseley has been taken over by the Co-Op who have refurbished it at a cost of £450,000. 15.11.10 Oaklands Recreation Project in Doubt: The redevelopment of the Oaklands Recreation Ground in Yardley is in doubt. Tesco agreed to contribute £3 million to the cost in 2002 when it was negotiating for planning permission to redevelop the Swan Shopping Centre as a new superstore; however, the superstore was delayed for 8 years by legal complications and the Swan Shopping Centre remains derelict; it now seems that Tesco might abandon the redevelopment of the shopping centre unless its obligation to contribute to the Oaklands Recreation Ground is reduced 14.11.10 Forensic Experts Comb Dale End: The police sealed Dale End on the evening of Saturday 13 November so that forensic experts could gather evidence following reports of gunmen brandishing weapons in the area. 14.11.10 Shots Fired in Newtown: The police sealed Pritchett Street in Newtown after gunshots were reported at roughly 10pm on Friday 12 November 14.11.10 Police Seize Ammunition in Balsall Heath: The police seized ammunition from two men aged 19 and 21 whom they arrested on Mary Street in Balsall Heath on Thursday 11th November 2010. 14.11.10 Selly Park Man Hanged Himself: The Assistant Coroner has heard evidence that a 33-year-old man was found hanging at his home on Kitchener Road in Selly Park on 8th June 2010; he appears to have committed suicide, possibly because he was worried about losing his job. 13.11.10 New Rapid Transit for Birmingham: A new rapid transit system of tram-style buses, known as the Birmingham Sprint, could be introduced within five years. The buses would run on dedicated lanes rather than rails and would stop at tram-style platforms. The initial routes would be Five Ways - Walsall, Airport - Ladywood, Eastside - Bartley Green and Ladywood - Perry Barr. 13.11.10 New Library Will Open in 2013: The new Birmingham Central Library will open in 2013 and according to architect, Francine Houben, it will transform Centenary Square from a thoroughfare linking the ICC and Retail Quarter into a destination in its own right. The £189 million library will feature a transparent glazed facade covered by a metal filagree mesh; it will share a foyer, bars, restaurants and a 300-seat theatre with the neighbouring Birmingham Rep; the two buildings will be linked at ground floor and mezzanine levels and an external amphitheatre will be created. 12.11.10 Councillor Calls for More Allotments: A review chaired by Roger Harmer (Liberal Democrat) has recommended that part of Selly Oak Hospital should be redeveloped as allotments. Birmingham currently has 115 allotments containing 7,000 plots; many have long-waiting lists; the average annual rent per plot is £28; the review has concluded that rents should increase. 12.11.10 Police Seize £1 million from Stechford Loft: Police seized £1 million hidden in a holdall in the loft of a semi-detached house in Stechford in September 2010. The money, believed to be the proceeds of drug dealing, was officially confiscated at Birmingham Magistrates Court on 26 October 2010. 12.11.10 Councillor Arrested for Public Stoning Comments: Gareth Compton, the Conservative councillor who represents Erdington, has been arrested for calling for the stoning of a female Muslim journalist on his Twitter feed. He has since apologised for "an ill-conceived attempt at humour". 12.11.10 New Artwork Unveiled in Cube Atrium: A £250,000 artwork called Lovely People by Aaron Bird has been unveiled in the atrium of the Cube on Commercial Street in Birmingham Westside. It consists of seven life-sized bronze casts of real people whose faces have been replaced by a shiny heart. 11.11.10 New Food Distribution Centre for Perry Barr: Euro Foods Group plans to open a new distribution centre on a five acre site on Wellhead Lane in Perry Barr that should create 120 new jobs. 11.11.10 Drugs Arrests in Lozells: A 21-year-old suspected drugs dealer has been arrested at an address on Berners Street in Lozells; police seized 21 wraps of a substance believed to be crack cocaine; a 21-year-old woman was also arrested for possession of cannabis. 11.11.10 Sexual Assault in Pype Hayes Park: A 16-year-old girl attending a firework display at Pype Hayes Park was sexually assaulted by four teenage boys near a temporary toilet block at roughly 8.30pm on Friday 5 November. 10.11.10 New Street Station Evacuated: New Street Station was evacuated today at 10am because a defective fire alarm sounded on platform one; it reopened at 11am. 10.11.10 Opera on Number 11 Bus: The Welsh National Opera performed Mozart's Magic Flute on a special opera bus travelling on the number 11 route on Thursday 10th November. 10.11.10 Accoks Green Retirement Village Controversy: The Extra Care Charitable Trust has filed a planning application for a retirement village on the former Denso factory site on Shaftmoor Lane in Acocks Green; this site adjoins Aero Engine Controls which operates 24/7. Should the retirement village be built, the aerospace factory may relocate rather than alter its shift patterns. 10.11.10 Kingstanding Woman Starved Dog: A 33-year-old woman from Finchley Road in Kingstanding has admitted four charges of animal cruelty at Birmingham Magistrates court; she allegedly starved a tethered dog that was discovered by the RSPCA during a home visit on 8 July 2010. 10.11.10 Lakeside Superbowl Closes in Stirchley: The Lakeside Superbowl in Stirchley has closed and 30 employees have been made redundant. 10.11.10 Body in Birmingham and Worcester Canal: The corpse of a man aged around 60 was found in the Birmingham and Worcester Canal in the Attwood Green area of central Birmingham, between the Granville Street and Bath Row bridges, on Sunday 7 November. 09.11.10 Methodist Central Hall Conversion Approved: The Planning Committee has approved the conversion of Methodist Central Hall on Corporation Street into 47 studio apartments, a restaurant, bar and offices; the hall currently houses the Que nightclub. 09.11.10 Handsworth Teacher Reprimanded: A teacher has been reprimanded by the General Teaching Council for texting, surfing the web and making personal calls whilst teaching lessons at Grove Primary School in Handsworth; she was suspended in May 2008 and has since resigned. 09.11.10 New Health and Community Centre in Sparkbrook: The former site of Christ Church (1867) in Sparkbrook, which was destroyed by a tornado in July 2005, will be redeveloped as a health and community centre with GP practices, dental services, physiotherapy & baby clinics, social enterprise offices and a community library; building work will start this month; completion is anticipated in late 2011; a church hall with community rooms and a cafe will be added at a later date. 08.11.10 River Cole Flood Warning: The Environment Agency has warned that the River Cole may flood following heavy rain; areas particularly at risk include Billesley and Sarehole. 08.11.10 Corpse Discovered Outside Airport: The dead body of a 51-year-old man, who appeared to have been hit by several vehicles, was discovered outside Birmingham Airport on the Coventry-bound carriageway of the A45 on Sunday 7 November. 08.11.10 Planning Committee Approves Woodgate Asda: The Planning Committee has approved plans for an Asda store, filling station and 432-space car park on Barnes Hill in Woodgate. 08.11.10 Youngsters Suspected of Battering O2 Doorman: The police have arrested four youths, including a 17-year-old girl and 14 year-old boy, in connection with an assault on a doorman who was battered whilst on duty outside the O2 on Bristol Street in Southside on Thursday 14 October. 08.11.10 Erdington Teacher Worked as Prostitute: The General Teaching Council has reprimanded a 54-year-old woman who advertised her services as a prostitute whilst teaching 14-16 year-olds enrolled at the Virtual College in Erdington. 07.11.10 Public Consultation on Moseley Tesco Plan: The Planning Committee will arrange a public meeting to consider an application to develop the Meteor car dealership on St Marys Row in Moseley as sheltered housing, a GP surgery and Tesco convenience store. 07.11.10 White Horse Refurbishment in Sutton Coldfield: The White Horse on Whitehouse Common Road in Sutton Coldfield has closed for a £180,000 refurbishment; it should reopen on Thursday 25th November. 07.11.10 New Health Centre for Erdington: The Erdington Health and Wellbeing Centre has opened on Erdington High Street; it contains a walk-in GP practice and sexual health centre. 06.11.10 Muggers Ambush Businessmen in Sheldon: Thieves posed as private car sellers in order to dupe two businessmen into carrying a large quanity of cash to the Radleys in Sheldon where they were beaten and robbed at roughly 5.10pm on Friday 22 October. 06.11.10 Passenger Mugged on Number 49 Bus: A 17-year-old boy was beaten and robbed by a gang of youths on a number 49 bus at roughly 10pm on Friday 22 October; the thieves caught the bus at Longbridge Railway Station and got off on the Stratford Road in Shirley. 06.11.10 Man Died in Sheldon Flat Fire: The Assistant Deputy Coroner has heard evidence that a 58-year-old man with multiple sclerosis died from burns in a fire at his flat on Greenvale Avenue in Sheldon at around 9.30pm on 11 February 2010; the blaze was caused by a discarded cigarette. 06.11.10 Border Agency Raid on Tyseley Food Plant: The UK Border Agency raided Roshan Frozen Foods on Wharf Road in Tyseley at 10am on Thursday 4 November. They checked 20 employees and arrested two men, an Afghan and an Iraqi, who are suspected of being illegal immigrants. 06.11.10 Cannabis Farm in West Heath: A 28-year-old man has been jailed for 21 months at Birmingham Crown Court for cultivating cannabis at a house on Pritchett Road in West Heath that was raided by police on 28 May 2010. 06.11.10 Man Charged with Sheldon Park Murder: A 38-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 34-year-old woman from Kingstanding who was found strangled in Sheldon Country Park on Saturday 30 October. 05.11.10 Cyprus Airways Withdraw Birmingham Flights: Cyprus Airways will withdraw flights from Birmingham to Larnaca and Paphos in March 2011 due to falling demand. 05.11.10 Abusive Bus Passenger Arrested on Colmore Row: A youth was arrested on Colmore Row on a number 126 bus at roughly 11.45 am on Wednesday 3 November; he is alleged to have racially abused the driver and repeatedly kicked the bus doors. 05.11.10 Corpse in Birmingham and Fazeley Canal: Factory workers discovered the body of a dead man in the section of the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal that runs alongside the Tyburn Road in Erdington at 8am on Thursday 4 November. 05.11.10 Floozie in the Jacuzzi is Working Again: Three months of repairs costing £300,000 on leaking pipes beneath the Floozie in the Jacuzzi on Victoria Square have been completed. 04.11.10 Fatal Crash on St Chads Queensway: A 30-year-old female motorist crashed into a road sign on St Chads Queensway in central Birmingham at around 3.30am on Thursday 4 November; she died shortly afterwards at City Hospital in Winson Green. 04.11.10 Ambulance Crashes in Bordesley Green: An ambulance collided with a car at the junction of Eastfield Road and Bordesley Green East at around 11.45pm on Tuesday 2 November.
