30.06.10 Cannabis Factory Raided in Hockley: Police have raided a cannabis factory consisting of 900 plants in four rooms at disused industrial premises in Hockley. They were alerted by electricity workers. 30.06.10 Coroners Verdict on Head-on Smash in Druids Heath: The Birmingham Coroner has heard evidence that a head-on smash, which occurred on Bells Lane in Druids Heath on 30 November 2008, was caused by a 19 year old woman who was driving whilst intoxicated and without a license. The woman crashed into another vehicle, killing both herself and a 62-year-old secretarial worker. 30.06.10 Suspected Murder in West Heath: Police discovered the body of a 71-year-old woman at a house on Burford Park Road in West Heath on Monday 29 June. An 82-year-old man, who lives on Bomers Field in Rednal, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. 29.06.10 New Late Night Cafe Bar in Jewellery Quarter: A new late night cafe bar on Frederick Street in the Jewellery Quarter has been granted planning permission; it will be able to stay open until 2am in the week and 3am at weekends. 29.06.10 Harborne Hill School to Become Academy: It appears likely that Harborne Hill School will cease to be under council control from September and will instead become an academy sponsored by Birmingham Metropolitan College. The City Council has agreed to the change of status which will also require the approval of Education Secretary Michael Gove. 29.06.10 New Lap Dancing Club on Broad Street: The Boujee Rooms, a nightclub at 193-194 Broad Street, has been granted a license to host strip, pole and lap dancing 24 hours a day. 28.06.10 Floozie in the Jacuzzi Needs Major Repairs: The fountain, affectionately known as the Floozie in the Jacuzzi on Victoria Square in the Business Quarter, has been drained because of massive leaks. The council will spend around £300,000 repairing the pipework beneath Victoria Square. 28.06.10 Woman Dies in Kings Heath House Fire: An elderly woman died in a fire at her home on Woodthorpe Road in Kings Heath on the morning of Sunday 27 June. The fire was caused by a faulty electric blanket; there were no smoke alarms. 28.06.10 Man Charged with Lozells Riot Murder: A 28 year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 23-year-old IT worker who was stabbed on Carlyle Road in Lozells during the riots of October 2005. The man, who returned from Pakistan on Friday 25 June, was arrested at Manchester Airport. 27.06.10 Burglars Target Prep School in Edgbaston: Burglars stole 25 silver cups and 10 computers from West House School on St James Road in the Calthorpe area of Edgbaston during the early hours of Saturday 26 June. They broke in through a toilet window, disabled the alarms, and escaped by breaking down the front door. 27.06.10 Great Barr House Fire Caused by Candle: A candle left unattended in a bedroom caused a fire at a semi-detached house on Yateley Avenue in Great Barr at around 7am on Saturday 26 June. A woman was hospitalised with burns to her arms. 27.06.10 West Heath Toddler Died on Trampoline: The Coroner has heard evidence that a 3 year old boy died as a result of a tragic accident at his home on Staple Lodge Road in West Heath on 13 July 2009. The boy, who was wearing his father's tie, had attempted to climb off a trampoline whilst his mother' back was turned. The tie became tangled in the steel frame of the trampoline and the boy was suspended by the neck and died of asphyxiation. 26.06.10 Kingstanding Cut Throat Jailed for Seven Years: A 20 year-old man who cut the throat of a 30 year-old man, whom he believed had been bullying his mother, has been sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for wounding with intent at Birmingham Crown Court. The attack occurred on Warren Farm Road in Kingstanding on 24 October 2009. 26.06.10 Woman Fell from Middle Park Tower Block: A 25-year-old woman fell 20 metres from the window of her 6th floor flat at Ascot Court on Abdon Avenue in the Middle Park area of Weoley at around 8pm on the evening of Wednesday 23 June. The woman had locked herself out and was trying to re-enter by climbing along a ledge. She has been taken to QE Hospital with multiple fractures. 25.06.10 Man Shot on Bramley Drive in Handsworth Wood: A 32-year-old man was shot in the groin on Bramley Drive in Handsworth Wood at around 11.30pm on Thursday 24 June. 25.06.10 Man Shot in Stomach on Villa Road in Lozells: A 20 year old man was shot in the stomach outside the Tennessee Fried Chicken Store on Villa Road in Lozells on Thursday 24 June at around 11.15pm. He was hospitalised and is believed to be in a stable condition. 25.06.10 Pope Will Hold Open Air Mass in Longbridge: Pope Benedict XVI will hold a papal mass at Cofton Park in Longbridge for the beatification of Cardinal Newman on 19 September 2010. The mass was originally scheduled for Coventry Airport which can hold 150,000 worshippers whereas Cofton Park can barely hold 80,000. However, the change of venue will allow the Pope to visit Cardinal Newman's grave at the Oratory House in Rednal. 25.06.10 Man Rescued from Canal in Selly Oak: A man fell into the Birmingham and Worcester Canal near Selly Oak Railway Station at around 8pm yesterday evening. He was rescued by the fire service and hospitalised with suspected spinal injuries. 24.06.10 Sutton Coldfield Magistrates Court May Close: Sutton Coldfield Magistrates Court could be closed and its caseload transferred to Birmingham Magistrates Court as part of a national strategy to reduce the budget of the Ministry of Justice. 24.06.10 LDV Debt Mountain Revealed: A report by administrators Price Waterhouse Cooper has revealed that many unsecured creditors of the insolvent van manufacturer LDV, which effectively closed in December 2008, will receive less than one penny in the pound since the amount available for distribution is around £600,000 whereas the debt mountain is roughly £75 million. 24.06.10 Police Target Drug Dealers in Alum Rock: Police are continuing to target drug offenders in the Alum Rock and Washwood Heath areas of east Birmingham as part of Operation Eliminate which has so far resulted in the arrest of 60 suspects. 23.06.10 Beggar Evicted from Newtown Council Flat: A 43-year-old Newtown man has been evicted from his council flat at Fallows House on Ruddington Way for persistent begging. He breached an earlier injunction by harassing his neighbours and targeting lone women and the elderly. 23.06.10 Shots Fired in Aston: Residents on Upper Sutton Street in Aston reported six gunshots at around 9.15 pm on Monday 21 June. The police closed the street between Park Lane and Victoria Road in order to search for evidence. 22.06.10 Firmin & Son Win MOD Contract: Firmin and Son, the sword and regalia manufacturer based on Newtown Row, have won a £4.1 million contract to supply the UK armed forces with buttons, badges and hand-embroidered insignia. 22.06.10 Travellers Camp in Woodgate Valley: Travellers have set up camp in Woodgate Valley Country Park after a gate was broken on Clapgate Lane. Park Rangers are currently filing eviction papers. It is believed that the illegal encampment consists of at least 12 caravans. 22.06.10 Aldi Submits Plans for Store at Edgbaston Mill: The German discount retailer Aldi has submitted plans for a 14,000 sq. ft. food store at Edgbaston Mill, the new commercial development being built by Calthorpe Estates opposite Edgbaston Cricket Ground. 21.06.10 House Gutted by Fire in Quinton: A house on College Road in Quinton, believed to have been occupied by 10 Slovakian immigrants, was gutted by a fire at around 3pm on Sunday 20 June. One man suffered slight burns; there were no other injuries. 21.06.10 300th Soldier Killed in Afghan War Dies at QE: The 300th UK soldier to be killed in the Afghan war died of his wounds at the newly-built QE Hospital in Edgbaston on Sunday 20 June. The Centre for Defence Medicine was transferred there on 16 June. 20.06.10 Addict Mugged Kitts Green OAP: A 26-year-old heroin addict forced his way past a 76-year-old OAP and then ransacked her flat in Kitts Green on 13 February 2010. The man, whose image was caught on CCTV, has been jailed for 6 years at Birmingham Crown Court. 20.06.10 Bus Driver Caused Death by Careless Driving: A 41-year-old bus driver from Gladstone Street in Aston has pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving at Birmingham Crown Court. The driver knocked down a 63-year-old cyclist at Lancaster Circus in Newtown at 6am on Wednesday 9 December 2009. He was sentenced to a 12 month community order and 18 month driving ban. 20.06.10 Pet Boa Constrictor Escapes Kitts Green Flat: A 2.5 metre boa constrictor, which is kept as a pet by a 27-year-old unemployed man, escaped from a flat on Kitts Green Road on Saturday 12 June and has yet to be recaptured. 19.06.10 Two Stabbings at City Centre Strip Club: One man was stabbed in the chest and another in the stomach at the Medusa Gentlemens Club in Birmingham Southside at around 2.30am this morning; both have been hospitalised and are in a stable condition. 19.06.10 Man Cleared of Selly Oak Killing: A 28-year-old vigilante, who punched a 26-year-old suspected burglar on Lottie Road in Selly Oak on 20 June 2009, has been cleared of manslaughter at Birmingham Crown Court. The victim, who suffered a fractured skull, died three days later. The jury heard evidence that he was carrying stolen goods, burgled from a nearby house, at the time of the assault. 19.06.10 Medical Centre To Replace Kingstanding Kwik Save: The Birmingham Planning Committee has approved a proposal to demolish the former Kwik Save supermarket on College Road in Kingstanding and replace it with a doctor's surgery and health care centre. 18.06.10 Birmingham Police Now Armed with Tasers: Specialist uniformed police officers on patrol in Birmingham have been equipped with 50,000 volt electric stun guns. 18.06.10 Factory Space 2 Events Banned after Shootings: The venue known as Space 2 at the Custard Factory in Digbeth has been banned from holding future events pending a security review. Four people were shot there in the early hours of Sunday 13 June. The ban will be reviewed on 12 July. 18.06.10 Drunk Football Fan Jailed for Digbeth Assault: A 20-year-old football fan from Tustin Grove in Acocks Green, who attacked an Asian man on Digbeth High Street on Saturday 12 June after watching England draw with the USA, has been jailed for 6 months by Birmingham Magistrates. 17.06.10 Car Crashes into House at Sheldon: A 31-year-old man crashed a Vauxhall Zafira into the porch of a house on Chaffcombe Road in Sheldon at around 9pm on Tuesday 15 June. He was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and taking a vehicle without consent. 17.06.10 Plans for Shard End Traveller Camp are Abandoned: Plans to build a new traveller camp on the site of a disused sewage works in Shard End have been abandoned due to budgetary constraints. 17.06.10 Ring of Steel Cameras Switched Off: The police have switched off 49 CCTV and 169 license plate recognition cameras in Sparkbrook. These cameras form part of a ring of steel created around the largely Muslim areas of inner east Birmingham and were financed by the Home Office from the Terrorism and Allied Matters Fund. The switch-off was in response to complaints that the cameras wrongly stigmatise Sparkbrook as a terrorist ghetto. They will be covered by bags pending consultation. 16.06.10 Mobility Scooter Runs Down OAP in Kingstanding: An 83 year old woman was hit from behind by a mobility scooter on the Kingstanding Road at around 1pm on Saturday 22 May. The pensioner broke her wrist and ankle and sustained multiple cuts and bruises; the driver did not stop. 16.06.10 Brain Injury Centre to Open in Hall Green: The private health provider Hunters Moor Neurorehabilition is converting a former nursing home on Cateswell Road in Hall Green into a specialist brain injury treatment centre. It will include a 35 bed clinic and create around 75 new jobs. 16.06.10 MG Design Studio Launched in Longbridge: The Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation has opened a new MG Design Studio at Longbridge that will create around 300 hi-tech jobs. The company currently manufactures 400 vehicles per year at Longbridge, but will substantially increase annual production when it launches the MG6 later this year. 15.06.10 New Car Park in Bromford: A new car park with 79 spaces is planned for the main entrance to the new Hodge Hill Primary Care Centre on Firs Farm Drive in Bromford. 15.06.10 Golden Square for Golden Triangle: A new plaza called Golden Square has been proposed for the junction of Warstone Lane and Vyse Street in the Golden Triangle area of the Jewellery Quarter. The new plaza would feature a lawn, orchard, paving, seating and an entrance canopy with gold leaf decoration. The anticipated cost is £1.5 million plus maintenance. 15.06.10 Dog Hanged from Ladywood Tower Block: A 27-year-old man has admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a dog at Birmingham Magistrates Court. He tethered the animal to the window catch of a 15th floor balcony at his brother's flat in Cambridge Tower on Brindley Drive in Ladywood. The dog subsequently fell off the balcony and was throttled by its lead and choke collar. 14.06.10 Selfridges Summer Sale Begins: The Selfridges summer sale begins today; designer shoes clothes and handbags, including brands such as Prada and Vivienne Westwood, have been discounted by up to 75%. 14.06.10 Fatal Hard Shoulder Crash on M6: A man died after his car ploughed into the rear of a lorry parked on the northbound hard shoulder of the M6, between junctions 6 and 7, at around 9pm on Sunday 13 June. Three other vehicles collided with the crash scene. Two men and a woman were treated at Sandwell Hospital for arm injuries. 14.06.10 Application for Tesco Store in Moseley: A planning application has been submitted for a new Tesco food store at the junction of St Mary's Row and Oxford Road in Moseley Village. The new store would provide employment for around 70 staff and be part of a larger development including 13 flats, a medical centre and parking for 100 vehicles. The site was previously occupied by Ford Meteor. 13.06.10 Four Shot at Digbeth Custard Factory: A 25-year-old woman and 3 men aged 20, 23 and 25 were shot at around 1am this morning at an urban music event held at the Custard Factory on Gibb Street in Digbeth ; all the victims were hospitalised; their condition is unknown. 13.06.10 Weoley Woman Made False Rape Allegation: A 23-year-old woman from West Cliff Place in Weoley Castle has been jailed for 2 years and 1 month at Birmingham Crown Court. She made a false rape allegation against an unnamed man who was arrested and remanded on bail for 3 months. 13.06.10 Man Shot in Alum Rock: A 28-year-old man was shot as he sat in a vehicle on Alum Rock Road with four companions at around midnight on Friday 11th June. The gunman approached the car on foot and appeared to target his victim who has been hospitalised and is in a stable condition. 12.06.10 Man Stabbed in Hay Mills: A 31-year old man was stabbed on Fast Pitts Road in Hay Mills at around 11pm on Friday 11 June; his condition is stable. 12.06.10 Woman Jailed for Sparkhill Cannabis Farm: A 38-year-old woman, who lives on Alders Mead Road in West Heath, has been sentenced to 2 years and 24 weeks imprisonment at Birmingham Crown Court for the cultivation of 13 cannabis plants and 30 seedlings at a business unit in Sparkhill which she rented under a false name. The plants were discovered by aerial thermal imaging. The defendant had committed a similar offence in 2008. 12.06.10 Pope To Visit New Oscott: The Pope will visit St Mary's College in New Oscott, which is the Seminary of the RC Archdiocese of Birmingham, on the afternoon of Sunday 19 September 2010. 11.06.10 Woman Died After fall Outside Digbeth Bar: The Coroner has heard evidence that a 42-year-old alcoholic died in August 2009 at her flat at Wellesbourne Tower in Highgate after sustaining two brain bleeds following a fall from a mobility scooter outside Cobs Bar in Digbeth. 11.06.10 Lea Hall Bus Depot To Close: The Travel West Midlands depot at Lea Hall will close next month as parent company, the National Express Group, reduces its number of local depots from 6 to 5. The Lea Hall depot employs 400 staff; its drivers will be transferred to other depots at Bordesley, Digbeth, Acocks Green, Yardley Wood and Perry Barr. 11.06.10 Drunk Driver Jailed For Fatal Handsworth Crash: A 36-year old man has been jailed for 7 years 4 months at Birmingham Crown Court for causing death by dangerous driving; he drove whilst drunk, colliding with three vehicles near the junction of Soho Road and Villa Road; the driver of the third vehicle, a 45-year-old father of two, died of severe crush injuries. 10.06.10 Lockout At New Style Radio in Winson Green: 3 professional staff and 67 volunteers have been locked out of New Style Radio in Winson Green which is an Afro-Caribbean station with a weekly audience of 70,000. The Board of Directors have laid off the professional staff and the station is broadcasting automated music. 10.06.10 Birmingham International Food Fair Opens: The Birmingham International Food Fair opened today with 120 stalls on New Street, Chamberlain Square and Victoria Square. Visitors will be able to sample cuisine from around the world during the ten-day annual event which attracted over 250,000 visitors last year. 10.06.10 Charges in Connection with 1993 Saltley Murder: Police have arrested and charged four men in connection with the murder of a 35-year-old father-of-two who was shot four times in the head and chest at a disused steel storage yard in Saltley in November 1993. 09.06.10 Teenager Sexually Assaulted Near Old Rep: A 19-year-old girl, who was returning to her hotel after a night at the Arcadian, was grabbed by the throat, forced into a doorway, and sexually assaulted on Station Street, near the Old Rep, at 4.30am on Sunday 28 February 2010. She was rescued by passers-by, but her assailant escaped and is still at large. 09.06.10 Shooting on Old Walsall Road in Hamstead: A man was shot twice in the stomach in what appears to have been a drive-by shooting whilst walking on the Old Walsall Road in Hamstead at around 11pm on Tuesday 8 June. The incident occurred between Dyas Avenue and Kingsdown Avenue. 09.06.10 Scientologists To Open New HQ in Moseley: The Church of Scientology will open new regional headquarters at the grade-two-listed Pitmaston House (circa 1930) on Moor Green Lane in Moseley which was originally the headquarters of the Ideal Benefit Society. The church is currently based at Ethel Street in the Retail Quarter. 08.06.10 Bler and TFC Tag Graffiti Artist Bailed: A 20 year old graffiti artist from Ashbrook Road in Stirchley, who has admitted vandalising Small Heath Railway Station and St Andrews Healthcare Centre, has been bailed at Birmingham Crown Court. The man, who uses the tags Bler and TFC, had previously been remanded in custody for 70 days. 08.06.10 Edgbaston Super Hospital To Admit First Patients: The Queen Elizabeth Super Hospital in Edgbaston will admit its first patients on Wednesday 16 June when the A & E Department at Selly Oak Hospital will be transferred there. 08.06.10 Cycling Burglar Jailed for 4 Years: A 32-year-old man from Erdington has been jailed for 4 years at Birmingham Crown Court after admitting 11 charges of burglary. The offences were committed in Wylde Green in April 2010. The burglar toured the suburb on a bicycle, stealing cash and jewellery; he was caught by a DNA blood profile after cutting himself during a break-in. 07.06.10 Cashpoint Muggers Target City Centre: Muggers are targeting cashpoint users in Birmingham city centre. They often work in pairs. One will distract the victim after the card and PIN have been entered whilst the other takes cash directly from the machine under the cover of a newspaper. 07.06.10 OAP Dies After Home Attack in Erdington: A 75-year old woman has died after she was attacked in her own home on Milverton Road in the Stockland Green area of Erdington at around 9.00am today. A 53-year-old man, believed to be a relative, has been arrested by the police. 07.06.10 Tramp Jailed for Attack on OAP in Edgbaston: A 39-year-old homeless man has been sentenced to 15 months imprisonment at Birmingham Crown Court for an unprovoked irrational and drunken attack on a retired doctor on Somerset Street in Edgbaston. 06.06.10 Pensioner Dies in Boldmere Crash: A 95-year-old motorist died after his car smashed into a lamp post on Britwell Road in the Boldmere area of Sutton Coldfield at around 11.55 am on Friday 4th June. 05.06.10 Man Mugged Moseley Bank Customer: Birmingham Crown Court has jailed a 26-year-old man for five years who followed and mugged a bank customer after he withdrew £15,000 cash from Lloyds TSB in Mosley Village. 05.06.10 Aston Man Died Using Heroin: Birmingham Coroners Court has heard evidence that a 43-year-old factory worker died on 23 December 2009 at his home on Selston Road in Aston as a result of using heroin. 05.06.10 New Park & Ride Facility in Sheldon: An overspill car park with 55 spaces has been created at Sheldon Country Park so that more commuters can leave their vehicles and catch the train into Birmingham from the neighbouring Marston Green Station which has 96 spaces. 04.06.10 Grassland Fire in Sutton Park: A patch of grassland near the Streetly Gate entrance to Sutton Park caught fire at around 7.30pm on Thursday 3rd June. Fire-fighters quickly extinguished the blaze. 04.06.10 Man Wounded at Kings Norton Railway Station: A man sustained a neck wound during an incident at Kings Norton Railway Station at around 8.15pm on 3rd June. 04.06.10 New Tennis Centre For Edgbaston Priory: A planning application will be submitted for a new tennis centre at the Priory Club in Edgbaston. It will include a 3,000-seat centre court and an indoor school of excellence. The £10 million project will be funded by the Priory Club in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association and Birmingham City Council. 03.06.10 Camp Hill Stations Will Not Reopen Before 2014: The passenger transport authority Centro has announced that plans to reopen part of the Camp Hill Freight Line to passenger traffic and reintroduce stations at Hazlewell, Kings Heath and Moseley will be delayed until at least 2014. The new passenger service would terminate at Curzon Street in Eastside. 03.06.10 Thugs Break Barman's Arm at Rednal Pub: Two men attacked bar staff who refused to serve them at the New Rose and Crown in Rednal after closing time on Sunday 30 May. One of the bartenders suffered a broken arm during the assault. 03.06.10 Coroner Hears Evidence of Student Death: The Assistant Deputy Coroner has heard evidence that a 20-year-old male student died at a shared student house on Dale Road in Bournbrook on 5 February 2010. The student, who attended Staffordshire University, was visiting a 21-year-old friend who attends Birmingham University. The pair had been drinking and it seems that the deceased died in his sleep after inhaling vomit. 02.06.10 Untaxed Cars Crushed at Glebe Farm Precinct: The police have publicly crushed impounded untaxed vehicles at the Glebe Farm Shopping Precinct in Stechford. 02.06.10 Wartime Shell Defused on Wake Green Road: The new occupants of a 5 bedroom house on Wake Green Road in Moseley found an unexploded World War One artillery shell in their garage. It belonged to a former owner who stored curios in the garage. A section of Wake Green Road between Springfield Road and College Road was closed for 3 hours on Tuesday 1st June whilst the shell was made safe by the bomb squad. 02.06.10 New Playground for Shard End: A new play area will be constructed in 2011 off Brook Meadow Road in Shard End. 01.06.10 Students Jailed for Bartley Green GBH: Three students aged 16, 17 and 18 have each been sentenced to four months detention at Wolverhampton Crown Court for grievous bodily harm; they severely beat two 16-year-old youths outside a house party in Bartley Green. 01.06.10 Pensioner Died in Perry Barr Pan Fire: The Birmingham Coroner has heard evidence that a 64-year-old retired policewoman died in a fire caused by an overheated pan in the kitchen of her home on Glendower Road in Perry Barr in November 2009. 01.06.10 New Primary Care Centre for Hodge Hill: A new primary care centre will be built on Firs Farm Drive in Hodge Hill. The three-storey centre, which will cost around £8.2 million, will be a one-stop health shop where local residents can consult GP's and other health professionals. The building, which will open in Spring 2011, will replace several smaller centres, including the Hodge Hill Family Practice on Shawsdale Road.
