30.04.10 Edgbaston Man Jailed for Drunken Bus Robbery: A 22-year-old man from Dollery Drive in Edgbaston has been sentenced at Warwick Crown Court to 2.5 years imprisonment for an unprovoked drunken attack on a bus passenger during which he stole a mobile phone. The robbery occurred on 19 February 2010.

30.04.10 Prime Ministerial Election Debate at Birmingham University: The third and final prime ministerial election debate was held at the Aston Webb Building on the Edgbaston campus of Birmingham University on the evening of 29 April 2010. The debate was contested by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the Leader of the Conservative Party, David Cameron, and the Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg.

30.04.10 Roof Destroyed in Middle Park House Fire: The roof of a two storey detached house on Middle Park Road in the Weoley area of south-west Birmingham was destroyed by an accidental fire that started in an airing cupboard in the early hours of Wednesday 28 April. The fire was probably caused by an electrical fault or an overheated tumble drier. Nobody was injured.

30.04.10 Car Crash in Handsworth: Two vehicles collided at the junction of Holly Road and Hamstead Road in Handsworth at around 6.30 pm on Wednesday 28 April. A woman was taken to City Hospital with minor injuries.

29.04.10 New Heritage Attraction in Edgbaston: Winterbourne House in the University Quarter of Edgbaston is an Edwardian villa in the Arts and Crafts style that was built for the Nettlefold family in 1903. The interior, which has been carefully restored, will be open to the public from Saturday 1 May.

29.04.10 Car Crash on Aubrey Road in Small Heath: A motorist in his thirties collided with 8 parked vehicles and a telegraph pole after he his lost consciousness and mounted the kerb on Aubrey Road in Small Heath at around 9am on Tuesday 27 April.

29.04.10 New Travellers Camp Planned for Shard End: A new travellers camp with 29 permanent pitches could open on a former sewage works off Lea Ford Road in Shard End. If so, it would be the second permanent travellers camp in Birmingham; the first, which has 20 permanent pitches, is located beneath the M6 at Tameside Drive in Castle Vale.

28.04.10 Jurys Inn Open Broad Street Reservations Office: The Jurys Inn hotel chain are opening a central reservations office on Broad Street that will create 60 new jobs.

28.04.10 Lozells Pensioner Gets Life For Attempted Murder: A 76-year-old pensioner who lived in a flat on Wretham Road in Lozells has been sentenced to life with a minimum term of 7 years at Warwick Crown Court for wounding and attempted murder; the pensioner, who stabbed a neighbour in June 2009, had previously served 14 years for the manslaughter of his wife whom he killed with an axe in 1979.

28.04.10 Handsworth Student Shot Dead By Gangster Pistol: A 20-year-old male student was shot dead in Handsworth in April 2009; a ballistics report suggests that the bullet which killed him was fired from an illegally-converted 9mm pistol that has been linked to five other shootings in Birmingham. The pistol has never been recovered. The suspected killer was acquitted by a jury.

28.04.10 Afternoon Punch Up in Victoria Square: A mass brawl broke out in Victoria Square at around 5pm on Sunday 25 April. Seven men were arrested and one was taken to hospital with facial injuries. The violence may have been football-related since it occurred shortly after Aston Villa were awarded a controversial penalty against Birmingham City in a televised match.

27.04.10 Vandals Paint Swastikas in Kings Heath Park: Vandals painted Nazi swastikas on signposts and trees in Kings Heath Park during the weekend of 24/25 April.

27.04.10 Jewellery Quarter Couriers Targeted by Gangs: FedEx has suspended parcel deliveries to the Jewellery Quarter because their drivers have been targeted by criminal gangs.

27.04.10 Car Crash on Erdington High Street: A women was cut free from her car after it collided with another vehicle near to the Cross Keys pub in Erdington High Street at around 6.30 am on Monday 26 April. The woman was fitted with a spinal board and taken to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield.

26.04.10 Glamourous Showbar License Review: The license of the Glamourous Showbar on Hurst Street is under review because of violence and disorder. Police are regularly called to the basement venue which has a capacity of barely 100, features transvestite performers and regularly stays open until 6am.

26.04.10 Fatal Crash on Fort Parkway: A motorist, who was being followed by police, hit a wall on Fort Parkway in the Tyburn area of Erdington at around 4am this morning. He was taken to Heartlands Hospital in Bordesley Green where he was pronounced dead.

26.04.10 Vaisakhi Celebrations in Handsworth Park: 90,000 Sikhs have converged on Handsworth Park for the annual Vaisakhi celebration. Parades departed for the park from the Sikh temples at Handsworth and Smethwick at around 10am this morning. The festivities included music, dancing, craft displays and a Punjabi feast.

26.04.10 Violent Assault in Newtown: A 36-year-old man sustained severe head injuries after being assaulted on New John Street West in Newtown at around 3am on Sunday 25 April.

25.04.10 National Front Marches in Kingstanding: The National Front held a march attended by around 40 men and women in Kingstanding on Friday 23rd April. The party is fielding candidates in the forthcoming local elections for the wards of Oscott and Kingstanding and in the general election for the constituency of Erdington.

24.04.10 Digbeth Mugger Jailed: A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to 2 years 10 months imprisonment at Birmingham Crown Court for assaulting a woman and stealing her mobile phone; the incident occurred in the early morning on Dean Street in Digbeth in December 2009. The victim pursued her assailant and was joined by passers-by who caught the thief. 

24.04.10: Car Torched in Hockley: A car parked on Stainsbury Avenue in Hockley has been set alight; firemen prevented the blaze from spreading to other vehicles.

23.04.10 Cannabis Farm Raided in Bordesley Green: Police discovered 60 cannabis plants when they raided a house on Blakeland Street in Bordesley Green yesterday.

23.04.10 East End Foods Will relocate to Aston: East End Foods will move its headquarters from West Bromwich to the former site of HP Sauce in Aston where it will build a new distribution centre.

23.04.10 Planning Permission for New City Centre Skyscraper: Planning permission has been granted for Regal Tower which will be built at the junction of Sheepcote Street and Broad Street in the Convention Quarter of central Birmingham. At around 192 metres, the 56-storey tower will be the tallest in Birmingham; it will take 3 years to build.

23.04.10 Builder Farmed Cannabis in Erdington: A 31-year-old builder who farmed cannabis at a rented property on Ilford Road in Erdington has been sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment at Birmingham Crown Court. The house, which smelt strongly of cannabis, was raided by police who discovered 177 plants in two bedrooms.

22.04.10 Snow Hill Homeless Centre Redevelopment: The Homeless Centre on Old Snow Hill in the Jewellery Quarter will be extended to include 88 self-contained apartments for ex-hostel residents taking the first steps towards independent living. The number of direct access beds available to rough sleepers will also be increased from 157 to 200.

22.04.10 Taxi Crashes in Tyseley: A man has been cut free from a taxi that collided with another vehicle on Redfern Road in Tyseley. Fortunately, he sustained only minor injuries.

21.04.10 Arsonists Burn Parked Vehicles in Kings Heath: Two vehicles parked in Westfield Road in Kings Heath were randomly set alight by arsonists in the early hours of Tuesday 20 April.

21.04.10 Car Crash in Stirchley: Two women were injured in a car crash at the junction of Pineapple Road and Cartland Road in Stirchley at around 6pm on Monday 19 April. Both were taken to Selly Oak Hospital.

21.04.10 MG Production Resumes At Longbridge: MG has resumed production of the TF sports car at Longbridge after a six-month freeze. The company, now a subsidiary of Shanghai Automotive, is currently manufacturing 25 cars per week.

21.04.10 Two Pedestrians Injured in Castle Vale: Two pedestrians were hit by a car at Spitfire Island in Castle Vale at around 3pm on Tuesday 20 April.

20.04.10: Violent Joyriders Cruise Sutton Coldfield: Three men, possibly in their early twenties, broke into a house on Monmouth Drive in Boldmere at around 5am on Wednesday 7 April. They stole the keys to an Audi parked outside and drove along the Lichfield Road where they attempted to carjack a vehicle driven by a 46-year-old woman who managed to escape. The gang then drove to Gravelly Lane in Erdington where they mugged a 40-year-old man whom they punched in the face before driving off with his mobile phone. They later dumped the stolen vehicle on Goosemoor Lane in Erdington.

20.04.10 Stockland Green Mosque will Expand: The city planning committee has approved the proposed expansion of the mosque at the corner of Slade Road and Abbey Road in the Stockland Green area of Erdington. The number of worshippers will increase and the mosque, which is currently men-only, will also welcome women.

19.04.10  Teenage Bikers Seriously Injured in Hodge Hill:  Three teenagers, aged 16 to 18, suffered serious leg injuries after they fell off a motorbike on the Stechford Road in Hodge Hill in the early hours of Sunday 18 April.

19.04.10 Car Crash in Nechells: Two men were hospitalised with neck injuries following a car crash at the junction of Aston Church Road and Nechells Park Road at around 5pm on Saturday 17 April.

19.04.10 Blaze at Fashionwise Textiles in Hockley: A warehouse on Barr Street in Hockley occupied by Fashionwise Textiles caught fire in the early hours of this morning. Around 80% of the two-storey building was damaged.

18.04.10 Man Dies in Three Car Smash on Soho Road: A 45-year-old man died in City Hospital after his car collided with two other vehicles at the junction of Villa Road and Soho Road at around 9pm on Friday 16 April.

17.04.10 Hockley Man Jailed for Mugging Taxi Driver in Handsworth: A 20-year-old man from Vicarage Road in Hockley has been jailed at Birmingham Crown Court for 21 months for mugging a taxi driver in Handsworth at around 11pm on 9 March 2009. The defendant and three other men attempted to steal money from the driver before running off with his satellite navigation system.

17.04.10 Man Pleads Guilty to Balsall Heath Birthday Party Shooting: A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court to attempted murder; he gate-crashed a family birthday party at the Function Suite on Moseley Road in Balsall Heath on 30 September 2009 and shot one of the guests, a 22-year-old man, at close range because of a perceived insult.

16.04.10 Man Charged with Child Murder in Perry Barr Firebomb Attack: A 26-year-old man, who recently returned to the UK, has been charged with the murder of a six-year-old girl who died after her home on Bayswater Road in Perry Barr was firebombed in March 2006.

16.04.10 Life Sentence For Harborne Murderer: A 37-year-old man has been sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years for the murder of a 48-year-old man in March 2009. The victim was strangled and set alight at his home on Copperbeach Close in Harborne.

15.04.10 Spitfire Museum for Birmingham?: A new spitfire museum could be opened in the city centre within the next two years after feasibility funding was made available by Advantage West Midlands. Possible sites include the Thinktank Science Museum at Millennium Point. The spitfire was manufactured at Castle Bromwich during the Second World War.

15.04.10 Hotel Du Vin Manager Punched by Guest: Birmingham Employment Tribunal has heard evidence that a 28-year-old restaurant manager working at the exclusive Hotel du Vin in the city centre was suspended for his own protection after being punched by a guest annoyed about slow service.

14.04.10 National Front Plan Memorial For Kingstanding Murder Victim: The National Front are planning a gathering on Saturday 24 April in memory of a Kingstanding man who was killed in an unsolved drive-by-shooting on Cardington Avenue in Queslett at around 11pm on 13 November 2002.

14.04.10 Chinese Immigrant Farmed Cannabis in Harborne: A 24-year-old Chinese immigrant has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for tending 190 cannabis plants in three upstairs rooms at a house on Langford Grove in Harborne.

14.04.10 Gun Toting Teen Arrested in Nechells: A 17-year-old youth was arrested at Bradburne Way in Nechells after a handgun had been brandished on Victoria Road in Aston. He was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and remanded in custody at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday 12 April.

13.04.10 Pedestrian Dies in Sparkbrook Road Crash: A pedestrian was hit by a Cherokee jeep whilst crossing the Stratford Road near Aldi in Sparkbrook on Monday 12 April at around 10:30pm. The man suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital.

12.04.10 PM Launches Labour Manifesto at QE Edgbaston: The Prime Minister Gordon Brown chose to launch the Labour Party Manifesto for the forthcoming May election today at the newly-built Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the Metchley area of Edgbaston.

12.04.10 Three Car Smash in Perry Barr: Three vehicles collided outside Kwik Fit on the A34 Walsall Road at around noon on Sunday 11 April. One man was taken to the Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield with minor injuries.

11.04.10 Murder Inquiry in Stockfield: A 40-year-old man died yesterday in hospital shortly after collapsing at an address on Cherry Tree Croft in the Stockfield area of Acocks Green. Police have launched a murder investigation and a 19-year-old man is helping with enquiries. Update 13.04.10: 19-year-old suspect charged with murder.

10.04.10 Sheldon Man Cursed Neighbours with Voodoo Doll: A 58-year-old man from Coventry Road in Sheldon has been convicted of harassing his neighbours by placing Satanic symbols and a voodoo doll on their car between November 2009 and March 2010. The man received an eight week suspended prison sentence and must pay compensation and costs. The harassment began after he had been reported for using a disabled parking bay.

10.04.10 Will Airport Runway Extension Be Delayed?: The runway extension at Birmingham Airport might be delayed by a further three years until 2017 because of the recession. However the project, which already has funding and planning consent, is still scheduled for completion in 2014. Although construction has not yet started, planning is apparently at an advanced stage.

10.04.10: Three Pret Stores Will Open At Birmingham Airport: The sandwich chain Pret a Manger, which currently owns three stores in the city centre, has announced plans to open three more at Birmingham Airport this summer.

09.04.10 Jewellery Quarter Bar Must Close Earlier: The Vaults bar and restaurant on Newhall Hill in the Jewellery Quarter, which previously held a late license until 4am seven nights a week, must now serve last orders at 12.30am Sunday to Thursday and at 2am Friday and Saturday. This is due to an increase in complaints from local residents, particularly since the bar has attracted more late drinkers by introducing DJ sets in an attempt to beat the recession.

09.04.10 Problem Kings Heath Pub May Reopen: The Mountaineer pub on Ashburton Road in Kings Heath, which has a reputation for violence and loud music, could soon reopen subject to conditions including a ban on late drinking and live entertainment. The current owner, Enterprise Inns, has exchanged contracts for its sale to a private businessman.

08.04.10 Fox Hollies House Fire Death: A man in his seventies died after his house on Fox Green Crescent caught fire yesterday at around 2pm.

08.04.10 Harborne Stallion Bites Off Woman's Finger: A woman in her seventies was feeding a stallion in a field off Knightlow Road in Harborne at around 9:30 this morning when she was bitten and lost part of her finger which can not be found and has probably been eaten.

08.04.10 Bartley Green Woman Found Dead: A 36-year-old woman has been found dead at her home on Lye Close Lane in the Woodgate area of Bartley Green. Police are not treating her death as suspicious and a 42-year-old man, who was initially arrested, has been released without charge.

07.04.10 Burglars Target Rubery Church: Thieves have stolen electronic equipment valued at around £2,000 from St Chad's on New Road in Rubery. The equipment, which included a flat-screen TV and Wharfedale sound system, had been purchased for the church youth club. The theft was reported on Sunday 4th April.

 07.04.10 Suspected Murder of Wychall Woman: A 45-year-old woman was found dead in her flat on Lakehouse Grove in the Wychall area of Kings Norton at around 9am yesterday morning. Police arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of murder who was later released on bail.

06.04.10 Small Heath Factory Blaze: The ground floor of a two storey industrial building on Charles Road in Small Heath caught fire at around 3pm yesterday afternoon. Fire fighters prevented the blaze from spreading to the upper storey.

06.04.10 Pedestrian Hit By Car in Handsworth: A 67-year-old man was hit by a car whilst walking on the pavement on Heathfield Road in Handsworth at around 3pm on Sunday 4 April.

06.04.10 Four Hospitalised Following Moseley Crash: Two cars collided at the junction of Reddings Road and Moor Green Lane in Moseley at around 11.20 pm on Monday 5 April. Three men and one woman were fitted with neck collars and spinal boards and taken to Selly Oak Hospital.

05.04.10 Midland Art Centre Will Reopen on 1 May: The Midland Art Centre will reopen on 1 May after a two year refurbishment programme. The seating capacity of the theatre has been increased from 200 to 220; the seating can be collapsed to make room for 300 standing spectators. There is a new art gallery opposite the River Rea and a new performing arts space overlooking the Outdoor Arena.

04.04.10 Armed Robbers Raid Winson Green Supermarket: Four masked robbers armed with pistols and a shotgun raided Neezas Local Shop in Winson Green on the afternoon of Monday 29 March. They beat the cashier with an iron bar, stole £200 cash, several packets of cigarettes and a customer's handbag.

04.04.10 Man Dies at Hall Green Bus Stop: A 57-year-old man who was waiting for a bus on the Stratford Road in Hall Green died on the morning of Friday 2 April after being hit by a car whose driver appeared to have lost control after colliding with another vehicle. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene; the drivers of both vehicles were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

03.04.10 Green Lighting for Stirchley Cycle Route: A one mile section of the Rea Valley Millennium Cycle Route through Stirchley and Ten Acres is now equipped with three hundred solar-powered light studs whose batteries store energy during the day in order to illuminate the route at night.

03.04.10 Handsworth House Blaze on Soho Road: A three-storey house caught fire on the Soho Road in Handsworth at around 4am on Friday 2 April: nobody was injured.

02.04.10 Suspected Arson at Aston Manor School: There was a fire in the kitchens of Aston Manor School at around 11pm on Thursday 1 April, the last day of the Spring term. It appears from CCTV that the blaze was deliberately started by a man in his mid-20's who ignited several piles of waste paper.

02.04.10 Pedestrian Dies on Hagley Road: A pedestrian died after being hit by a van at the junction of Hagley Road and Hermitage Road at around 4:30 pm on Thursday 1 April.

01.04.10 College High School Closes Community Leisure Centre: The council has transferred control of College High School in Erdington to Endutrust Academies. The school has changed its name to the North Birmingham Academy and its leisure facilities, which include a sports pitch and swimming pool, will no longer be open to the public.

01.04.10 Late Night Brawl on Smallbrook Queensway: The late night refreshment license held by Caspian Pizza on Smallbrook Queensway has been suspended for one month following an early morning brawl outside the premises which resulted in two chefs being charged with wounding and affray.

01.04.10 Rainbow Library for Shard End: Plans for the redevelopment of Shard End Crescent include a rainbow-coloured library shaped like a "shard" of glass. The regeneration of Shard End, which will cost around £41 million, is already controversial, not least because shop rents are expected to increase threefold.

01.04.10 Permission Granted for Karting Track in Kings Norton: Formula One Karting has been granted permission to convert industrial premises in the Lifford Lane area of Kings Norton into a karting centre.
