Overview Yardley Wood

Yardley Wood is in the Billesley ward in south-east Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Billesley, Shirley, Warstock and Hall Green.

Yardley Wood was named after the woodlands that formerly covered the southern part of Yardley Manor but which, with the exception of a few pockets, had been entirely cleared by 1900.

Yardley Wood remained rural until the Billesley council estates were built after the First World War. More council housing was constructed on the site of Colebrook Priory between 1950 and 1970. A private estate was built at Bach Mill during the same period.

These homes mostly consisted of semi-detached pairs and low-density terraces. The surrounding green spaces were preserved, particularly in the Cole Valley which is now a linear country park.

Trttiford Mill Park

Trittiford Mill Park contains formal gardens, wetlands and a pool that once powered a corn mill.

The pool, which measures 500 metres by 30 metres, was created through the excavation of a hollow that was filled by leats cut from Chinn Brook and the River Cole.

The pool attracts swans, coots, great-crested grebes and bats; it is bridged by Scribers Lane next to a broad-leaved woodland, wetland scrape and old millrace.

Water voles, water rail and otters have often been seen in the area.

The park forms part of a six kilometre linear green space known as the Shire Country Park which straddles the Cole Valley from Yardley Wood to Small Heath.
