Wylde Green is in the Sutton New Hall ward in north-east Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Boldmere, Walmley, New Hall, Erdington Town and Sutton Coldfield Town. The name Wylde Green refers to an uncultivated common that once straddled the Birmingham Road but which was enclosed in the 1820's. The area remained rural until the mid-19th century when ribbon development, mainly of large detached villas, occurred along the major traffic routes after Wylde Green Railway Station opened on the Sutton Coldfield Line. Although some older homes have survived, many were replaced by new detached houses and semi-detached pairs, particularly between 1930 and 1950. The surrounding fields were privately developed from the 1950's onwards, mainly as detached housing. A linear commercial centre evolved along the Birmingham Road in the 1950's. Higher density council flats and a residential tower were built there in the sixties and the Lanes Shopping Centre opened in 1984.
