Wychall is in the Kings Norton ward in south Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Cotteridge, West Heath, Northfield Town, the Three Estates and Kings Norton Village. Wychall is a corruption of of "wic heall" which means "hall on a dairy farm". The hall in question, a moated mediaeval manor, was demolished in 1952. The River Rea, which powered Wychall Mill, drains through the area. The Birmingham and Worcester Canal was cut through the Rea Valley in 1815 and Wychall Reservoir was created in order to compensate the mill owners for water lost to the canal. The north side of the reservoir became heavily industrialised after Kings Norton Railway Station opened on the Birmingham and Gloucester Line in 1849. Otherwise, Wychall remained open countryside until Wychall Farm was developed as a council estate in the 1950's. The estate has been partially rebuilt since much of the housing was of poor quality. 500 homes and all nine residential towers have been demolished and replaced by 350 new houses built to modern specifications.
