Woodgate is in the Bartley Green ward in south-west Birmingham, four miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Quinton, Harborne, Weoley, Halesowen and Bartley Green. Woodgate is a corruption of the Anglo-Saxon "wudu gaet" which means woodland track, the area having once been covered by ancient woodland. Apart from a small settlement at the junction of Adams Hill, Wood Lane and Woodgate Lane, Woodgate was open countryside until the Woodgate housing estate was built in the 1970's. A business park was laid out on Clapgate Lane at around the same time. However, a belt of countryside was preserved as the Woodgate Valley Country Park. Kitwell Lane B32 4AH Map The route of the Lapal Canal, which linked the Dudley Canal at Netherton to the Birmingham and Worcester Canal at Selly Oak, passes through Woodgate Valley Country Park. The canal had to negotiate an elevated plateau and rather than construct several flights of locks, the engineers decided to dig a tunnel. The tunnel, which is 2.2 miles long is the 4th longest in the UK. Unfortunately, the tunnel frequently collapsed and was finally abandoned in 1917. Without the tunnel, the Lapal Canal could not serve its purpose and was back-filled. There are proposals for the restoration of the canal, but surveys indicate that the tunnel is structurally unsound. This difficulty could be resolved by a new up-and-over alignment.
