West Heath is in the Northfield council ward in south-west Birmingham, six miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Hopwood, Longbridge, Wychall, Turves Green, the Three Estates and Northfield Town. West Heath was originally open heathland on the west side of Kings Norton Manor. A hospital for infectious diseases was built there in 1889. A small settlement on Lilley Lane developed around the hospital, now a geriatric unit, but no major development occurred until after 1950. The area to the east of Alvechurch Road was then laid out as a council estate, mainly of semi-detached and terraced housing. When the original hospital building closed in 2008, parts of the campus were privately developed as high-density housing.
