The Washwood Heath council ward is in east Birmingham, roughly
two miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the
Nechells ward, the
Bordesley Green
ward, the Hodge Hill
ward and the
Stechford & Yardley North ward. The Washwood Heath ward
contains the areas of
Saltley, Ward End,
Washwood Heath,
and part of Alum Rock. |

There are approximately 26,000 people resident in the
Washwood Heath Ward.
The population density is roughly 66 persons per hectare
compared to an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The
average age is 37 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.
Approximately 63% of the population is of Asian origin with
roughly 56% from Pakistan, 5% from Bangladesh and 2% from India.
The white British population accounts for around 21% of
residents.
Around 5% of the population is black, including 4% of
Afro-Caribbean descent.
7.5% of residents are white non-British (including Irish),
2.5% are of mixed background, and 1% are of Chinese origin or
belong to some other ethnic group.

now several years out of date and which was collated in respect
of different ward boundaries.

The housing in Saltley and Washwood Heath on the western side of
the ward mainly consists of small terraced homes of pre-1919
build whilst Ward End, on the eastern side, is characterised by
interwar terraces, semi-detached pairs and high-density post-war
social housing, including tower blocks at Overpool. The rate
of owner occupation is 55%. Roughly 10% of homes are rented from
private landlords and 32% from the local authority or housing
associations. |
