Washwood Heath is in the Hodge Hill ward and the Washwood Heath ward in north-east Birmingham, three miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Nechells, Saltley, Tyburn, Hodge Hill and Ward End. Washwood Heath is named after the Wash Brook that drains through Ward End Park. It was once sparsely-populated heathland through which the Birmingham & Derby Junction Railway was cut in the 1830's and the Stechford Avoiding Line in the 1880's. Washwood Heath was heavily industrialised in the early 1900's. Rows of small terraced houses were built and a vast vehicle plant opened on Drews Lane. This plant, which was subsequently acquired by LDV, closed in 2009. Washwood Heath contains an industrial belt alongside the Birmingham to Peterborough Railway with access to the high-speed A47 Heartlands Parkway. A large part of this area has been left vacant by the closure of the van manufacturer LDV which was based at the vast Wolseley Works off Drews Lane. It seems unlikely that car production will resume at Washwood Heath since the administrators have sold LDV's assets to the Chinese venture capitalist Eco Concept which plans to manufacture light specialist commercial vehicles at Longbridge.
