Overview Ward End

Ward End is in the Hodge Hill ward and the Washwood Heath ward in east Birmingham, three miles from the city centre. It is named after the Ward family who were local landowners. The surrounding areas are Saltley, Stechford, Alum Rock, Hodge Hill and Washwood Heath.

Ward End was a rural village centred on Saint Margaret's Church until the early 1900's. It then became urbanised as Birmingham expanded eastwards.

Several rows of small terraced houses were built before 1914 followed by larger terraces, privately built for aspiring owner-occupiers, as Ward End evolved into an interwar residential suburb with a commercial centre at the Fox & Goose.

After the Second World War, Ward End Manor was demolished and the manorial farmland was developed as municipal terraced housing. In the 1960's, five residential towers were built on the Overpool Road and one on Sladefield Road.
