Overview Walmley

Walmley is in the Sutton New Hall ward in north Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Minworth, Tyburn, Castle Vale, New Hall, Pype Hayes and Wylde Green.

Walmley is a corruption of "warm leigh", which means a sheltered clearing, probably a reference to the south-facing slope at the top of Eachelhurst Road.

In the mid-19th century, Walmley was an estate village at the junction of Eachelhurst Road and Walmley Road.

The village, which served Penns Hall and New Hall, still features some older buildings, such as the church and almshouses, but was partially redeveloped as a small shopping centre in the 1960's with the addition of low-rise flats and one residential tower.

Walmley Village now stands at the heart of a residential suburb, mainly of detached homes privately built after 1960. This suburb is screened by Walmley Golf Course, the Plantsbrook Nature Reserve, the Warwickshire Green Belt and New Hall Valley Country Park.
