Overview Wake Green

Wake Green is in the Springfield ward and the Moseley & Kings Heath ward in south-east Birmingham, three miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Sparkhill, Springfield, Balsall Heath, Kings Heath and Moseley Village.

Wake Green is named after a common formerly at the junction of College Road and Wake Green Road on which wakes (mediaeval fairs) were held.

Wake Green was farmland until the late 19th century when it was developed as an affluent middle-class suburb. The area, which is generally regarded as part of Moseley, contains a large number of substantial detached homes set in large gardens, many of which were designed in the Edwardian Arts and Crafts Style.

There are also patches of interwar semi-detached housing, low-rise flats and a curious row of pre-fabricated bungalows on Wake Green Road that were assembled as temporary accommodation in 1945.
