Vauxhall is an area in Duddeston/Nechells. It was named after
the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens which were laid out in the grounds
of Duddeston Hall in the 1740's.
The original terminus of the Grand Junction Railway was
Vauxhall Station, which was built on the current site of
Duddeston
Station by George Stephenson in 1837.
Duddeston Hall was demolished and the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens redeveloped as the
Vauxhall Slums in the 1850's.
These slums were cleared in 1930-50 and replaced by the
Nechells Green Estate in 1954-69.
Vauxhall is now regarded as part of Duddeston/Nechells;
its memory is preserved by the Vauxhall Road and Vauxhall Sports
and Social Club etc. |
