Overview Tyseley

Tyseley is in the South Yardley ward and the Acocks Green ward in south-east Birmingham, four miles from the city centre. The name is a corruption of Tyssa's Leah which means the clearing owned by Tyssa. The surrounding areas are Greet, Sparkhill, Yardley, Acocks Green, Small Heath and Hay Mills.

Tyseley was farmland through which the Birmingham & Warwick Canal was cut in 1799 and the Great Western Railway in 1852. The North Warwickshire Line, between Stratford and Birmingham, was laid through Tyseley in the early 1900's.

Tyseley Station, which opened in 1907, became a busy junction and the site of a major engineering and goods yard. The surrounding area was industrialised and rows of small terraced houses were built on the west side of Reddings Lane.

These were followed by interwar council estates, mainly of short terraces arranged in geometric patterns, on the east side of Reddings Lane.
