Tyburn is in the Tyburn ward in north-east Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Castle Bromwich, Castle Vale, Erdington Town, Gravelly Hill, Hodge Hill and Washwood Heath. Tyburn was a place of execution in the 18th century and was named after the notorious Tyburn gallows that once stood on the site of Marble Arch in central London. The River Tame, which drains eastwards through Tyburn, powered early industrial mills. The Birmingham and Fazeley Canal was cut through Tyburn in 1790, followed by the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway in 1842. These routes created an industrial corridor, including the likes of Dunlop and Jaguar, whose southern flank is skirted by the M6. Part of the Tyburn Industrial Estate has been regenerated as an out-of-town shopping centre and the iconic Fort Dunlop is now a mixed-use development. Tyburn also includes some residential areas, most notably Birches Green which was named after an unenclosed pasture owned by the Birch family. The area was developed as a municipal housing estate in the 1920's, and is characterised by semi-detached houses and short terraces arranged in geometric patterns.
