Overview Turves Green

Turves Green is in the Northfield ward in south-west Birmingham, six miles from the city centre. The name is a corruption of turf green which indicates that the area was once common grazing land. Turves Green is surrounded by Longbridge, West Heath and Northfield Town.

Part of Turves Green was developed during the First World War when the Austin Village, now a conservation area, was built for Longbridge munitions workers.

However, the rest remained farmland until the 1960's when it was developed as a council estate, mainly of semi-detached and terraced homes. There are also blocks of low-rise flats and nine high-rise residential towers, including three on Fairfax Road and six off Turves Green Road.
