The council ward of Sutton New Hall is in north-east Birmingham, roughly five miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the Erdington ward, the Tyburn ward, the Sutton Trinity ward and the Warwickshire Green Belt.

The Sutton New Hall ward contains the areas of Minworth, New Hall, Walmley and part of Wylde Green.

There are approximately 23,000 people resident in the Sutton New Hall Ward.

The population density is 11 persons per hectare compared to an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The average age is 43 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.

The white British population accounts for 88% of residents.

Approximately 3.5% of the population is of Asian origin with roughly 2.5% from India and 0.5% from Pakistan.

Around 1.5% of the population is black, including 0.5% of Afro-Caribbean descent.

5% of residents are white non-British (including Irish), 1% are of mixed background, and 1% are of Chinese origin or belong to some other ethnic group.

The ward was largely rural until the 1930's when ribbon development, mainly in the form of suburban semi-detached housing, occurred along the main thoroughfares.

Privately-built estates with a high proportion of detached executive homes were laid out in Walmley after 1960, and in New Hall after 1970.

Higher density housing, including low-rise flats and a residential tower, was built at Walmley Village in the 1970's.

The Minworth area, which forms part an industrial corridor straddling the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal, is characterised by short terraces and semi-detached pairs built between 1930 and 1960.

The rate of owner occupation is around 85%. Roughly 4% of homes are rented from private landlords and 9% from the local authority or housing associations.
