Overview Sutton Coldfield Town Sutton Coldfield Town is in the Sutton Trinity ward in north-east Birmingham,, six miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Boldmere, Reddicap, Four Oaks, Mere Green, New Hall, Sutton Park and Wylde Green. Sutton is a corruption of the old English "suth tun" which means south farm, the original settlement having been south of Tamworth, the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia. Coldfield is derived from "col feld" which literally means "charcoal field", a reference to the local production of charcoal by burning timber. Sutton was a thriving mediaeval town owned by the Earls of Warwick, but its fortunes declined after the 16th Earl, Warwick the Kingmaker, was killed in the Wars of the Roses However, Sutton revived after local boy, John Vesey, was appointed Bishop of Exeter by King Henry VIII in 1509. Bishop Vesey used his vast ecclesiastical revenues for the benefit of Sutton Coldfield rather than Exeter. He built almshouses, rebuilt the church, re-opened the markets, founded the grammar school and persuaded the King to give Sutton Park to the townsfolk. Sutton Coldfield remained a small but prosperous market town until the Sutton Coldfield Railway opened in 1862. A belt of comparatively affluent suburbs then evolved, steadily expanding until Sutton Coldfield had merged with Birmingham to which it was officially annexed in 1974. Sutton Coldfield Town contains the original market town (now a conservation area), the modern town centre and the first Victorian suburbs. Churches in Sutton Coldfield Town Holy Trinity C of E Holy Trinity stands on Church Hill on the north side of Sutton Coldfield town centre; it is mediaeval in origin, but was largely rebuilt by Bishop Vesey in the 1530's; only the plinth and buttress underneath the East Window have survived from the original church. Bishop Vesey is interred in the north Chapel; his tomb features a splendid effigy carved in 1555, but the altar upon which it lies and the choir stalls and screens are Victorian; they were added in 1875 and are made from discarded oak panelling from Worcester Cathedral. The church was altered in 1879 when the north aisle, gallery and font were added; C.E.Bateman painted the chancel ceiling in 1914; he also decorated the nave and Vesey Chapel in 1929.
