Overview Stockland Green

Stockland Green is in the Stockland Green council ward in north-east Birmingham, four miles from the city centre. It was named after an enclosed common, stoc meaning enclosure and green, a common. The surrounding areas are Kingstanding, Witton, Erdington Town, Gravelly Hill, Old Oscott, Short Heath and Wyrley Birch.

A lunatic asylum, Highcroft Hospital, was built in Stockland Green in the 1860's. However, the area remained rural until developed as a suburb of Erdington in the early 1900's. Rows of terraced houses were then built on either side of Slade Road which became a busy thoroughfare with a commercial centre at Marsh Hill.

After Erdington was annexed by Birmingham in 1911, the north side of Marsh Hill (A4040) was developed as a council estate. These properties were mainly low-density semi-detached pairs arranged on neat suburban avenues.

Several blocks of flats, including a high-rise residential tower, were built on Bleak Hill in the 1960's and Highcroft Hospital was partially redeveloped as a high-density private estate in 2004-06.

Open Spaces in Stockland Green

Brookvale Lake Park

Brookvale Lake Park consists of a former Victorian drinking water reservoir encircled by a narrow belt of grassland and woodland.

The reservoir was created in 1890 by deepening a natural hollow below Gravelly Hill that was filled by damming two tributaries of the River Tame.

However, the reservoir was abandoned in the early 1900's, mainly due to industrial pollution and later became an open air lido; it is now a leisure amenity.

There is a circular path around the lake, which features a small wooded island. The park also contains a bowling green, playground and tennis courts.

Witton Lakes

The Witton Lakes are two disused Victorian drinking-water reservoirs which are fed by two dammed tributaries of the River Tame.

They are surrounded by paths, tree clusters and grass slopes and separated from each other by an earth mound with a bridge above a narrow connecting channel.

The lower lake now serves as a nature reserve whereas the upper lake is popular with model boat enthusiasts.

The lakes provide a habitat for ducks, geese and gulls; they are stocked with carp and bream which attract feeding herons; angling is prohibited.

There is a free car park at the main entrance on Gypsy Lane.

A new community orchard, funded by the Velvet Campaign, opened at Witton Lakes Park in May 2011 (News Headlines 15/05/11).
