Stirchley is in the Bournville ward and the Selly Oak ward in south-west Birmingham, four miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Bournville, Lifford, Cotteridge, Kings Heath, Moor Green and Selly Park. Stirchley is a corruption of Streetley which means a clearing by a Roman road. The road in question, Icknield Street, crossed the River Rea by Lifford Lane. The River Rea, which drains northwards through Stirchley, powered early industrial mills. The Birmingham and Worcester Canal was cut on the western side of Stirchley in the 1790's followed by the Birmingham Suburban Railway in the 1870's. The Camp Hill Line was laid on the eastern side of Stirchley in the 1880's. These routes prompted industrial development followed by urbanisation. The area is characterised by pre-1919 terraces and interwar council estates. The Church of the Ascension on Pineapple Grove is the second Church of Ascension built in Stirchley; the first, which stood on Hazlewell Street, was destroyed by fire in 1965. The current church is octagonal in shape and was built in brick next door to Saint Hugh's, now a church hall, but originally a daughter church of the first Church of Ascension. The interior of the current church contains many treasures from the first church; these include altar silver, processional crosses, stained glass and Stations of the Cross. The baths consist of a swimming pool, spectator's balcony, men's and women's slipper baths and steam room. An early filtration system meant that the pool could be cleaned without being emptied. A false floor was fitted above the pool in the winter so that it could double as a dance hall. The baths closed in 1988 and the building is now disused and in a poor state of repair. There are plans to reopen it as a community building. Links: Secular Listed Buildings Contact Sitemap User Conditions © 2008-2011 LACT Limited. All rights reserved
