Stechford is in the Hodge Hill ward and the Stechford and Yardley North ward in east Birmingham, four miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Alum Rock, Bordesley Green, Hodge Hill, Kitts Green, Ward End and Yardley. Stechford was named after the River Stich, a now-culverted tributary of the River Cole. An ancient ford near the confluence of these two rivers has been replaced by Stechford Bridge which carries Station Road across the Cole. Stechford was a rural hamlet until Stechford Railway Station opened on the London and Birmingham Line in 1844. Stechford then developed into a commuter village with a commercial centre at Stechford Five Ways. Several rows of Victorian terraced townhouses have survived on Station Road and Albert Road. Stechford became a busy freight junction following the construction of the Stechford Avoiding Line which enabled trains travelling between London and the Black Country to avoid New Street Station. This railway junction attracted industrial development. Stechford was annexed by Birmingham in 1911 and after the First World War, Flaxey Farm was privately developed as semi-detached housing and Glebe Farm was covered by an interwar council estate characterised by short terraces and semi-detached pairs. More council estates were constructed after the Second World War, particularly in the 1960's when low-rise flats, high-density terraces and three residential towers were built on Red House Farm.
