The Stechford and Yardley North council ward is in east
Birmingham, roughly four miles from the city centre. It is
flanked by the Sheldon ward,
the Bordesley
Green ward, the Hodge
Hill ward, the Shard
End ward and the
South Yardley ward. Stechford and Yardley North
contains the area of
Stechford and parts of
Yardley and Kitts
Green. |

There are approximately 25,000 people resident in the
Stechford & Yardley North ward.
The population density is roughly 52 persons per hectare
compared to an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The
average age is 40 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.
The white British population accounts for around 76.5%
of residents.
Approximately 7.5% of the population is of Asian origin with
roughly 5% from Pakistan and 2% from India.
Around 4.5% of the population is black, including 3.5% of
Afro-Caribbean descent.
8.5% of residents are white non-British (including Irish),
2.5% are of mixed background, and 0.5% are of Chinese origin or
belong to some other ethnic group.

The housing in Stechford and Yardley North mainly consists of semi-detached pairs
and medium-sized terraces built between 1930 and 1960. There
is also a large proportion of detached housing, particularly in
the area around Old Yardley Village which contains several rows
of Edwardian villas.
Higher-density council estates were built between 1950 and
1975 at Stechford on the north-west side of the ward and at
Poolway on the south-east side.
The ward contains eight tower blocks, three in Stechford and
five, awaiting demolition, on the Meadway in the Garretts Green
area of Yardley.
The rate of owner occupation is 63%. Roughly 5% of homes are
rented from private landlords and 28% from the local authority
or housing associations. |
