The ward includes Sparkhill which was first developed in the
1850's and is characterised by long Victorian terraces
with narrow backyards.
Some were constructed by early building societies in order to
increase owner occupation which carried the right to vote. Most
have been modernised through the addition of indoor lavatories
and bathrooms.
The housing is less dense in Springfield on the south side of
the ward where there are a greater number of interwar terraces
and avenues of semi-detached pairs and detached houses with
spacious front and rear gardens.
