Springfield is in the Springfield council ward in south-east Birmingham, four miles from the city centre. It is named after a spring near the Springfield Road in the Cole Valley. The surrounding areas are Billesley, Sparkhill, Hall Green, Wake Green and Kings Heath. Springfield was first developed in the early 1900's. The area contains a large number of detached homes set in comparatively large gardens, some of which are villas designed in the Edwardian Arts and Crafts style. There are also inter-war semi-detached pairs, post-war flats and terraces. Swanshurst Park Swanshurst Park, which was carved out of common grazing land in the 1950's, contains two pools, meadows, copses and a playground. The northern side has reverted to natural heathland. Joys Wood Joys Wood is a 9 acre patch of ancient woodland in the Cole Valley that forms part of the Shire Country Park which straddles the River Cole for roughly 4 miles from Yardley Wood to Small Heath. The woodland is named after Joy Fifer who campaigned for its preservation. It adjoins the Moseley Bog and has been designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation.Moseley Bog Moseley Bog is a drained mill pool that was once a secondary source of power for Sarehole Mill. It was fed by the Coldbath Brook which still runs through the 3 acre site as an open stream but is culverted at either end. The pool is flanked by prehistoric burnt mounds and a 9 acre remnant of ancient forest known as Joys Wood. Both the bog and woodland are a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. They form part of the Shire Country Park which straddles the Cole Valley for 3.75 miles between Yardley Wood and Small Heath. The first XI competes in the 1st division of the Birmingham & District Premier Cricket League on Saturday; it also plays in the Sunday Warwickshire League. Attock was established by Pakistani immigrants in the early seventies; it is named after a district of Punjab in Pakistan. Links: Sports Clubs Attock Cricket Club Key National Retailers in Springfield Co-Op Food 218 Swanshurst Lane B13 0AW - 0121 777 4466 - MapKey National Retailers in Brum Secular Listed Buildings in Springfield Moseley Grammar School Moseley Grammar School on College Road was designed by Joseph James in the Decorated Style; it was built in red-brick with stone dressings in 1850. The main facade features an axial tower with corner turrets; the interior contains a cloister, library and hall. The building was originally a college that trained Congregationalist Ministers; it was funded by the Mansfield family whose coat-of-arms appear on Moseley School badge. When the college closed in 1886, the building was successively an orphanage, military barracks and teacher-training college. It became a secondary school in 1923 and a boys grammar school in 1939; it is now a sixth form centre. Links: Secular Listed Buildings An unexploded artillery shell left over from the First World War was discovered in the garage of a five bedroom house on Wake Green Road in June 2010. A section of Wake Green Road between College Road and Springfield Road was closed for three hours on Tuesday 1st June whilst the shell was defused.
