Overview Springfield

Springfield is in the Springfield council ward in south-east Birmingham, four miles from the city centre. It is named after a spring near the Springfield Road in the Cole Valley. The surrounding areas are Billesley, Sparkhill, Hall Green, Wake Green and Kings Heath.

Springfield was first developed in the early 1900's. The area contains a large number of detached homes set in comparatively large gardens, some of which are villas designed in the Edwardian Arts and Crafts style. There are also inter-war semi-detached pairs, post-war flats and terraces.

Moseley Grammar School on College Road was designed by Joseph James in the Decorated Style; it was built in red-brick with stone dressings in 1850. The main facade features an axial tower with corner turrets; the interior contains a cloister, library and hall.

The building was originally a college that trained Congregationalist Ministers; it was funded by the Mansfield family whose coat-of-arms appear on Moseley School badge.

When the college closed in 1886, the building was successively an orphanage, military barracks and teacher-training college. It became a secondary school in 1923 and a boys grammar school in 1939; it is now a sixth form centre.
