Housing: Sparkbrook Ward |
|
|
|
The Sparkbrook ward was first developed as a gentrified suburb in the late
18th century. Some Regency mansions, now multi-occupied, survive
from this period.
The ward was redeveloped as a working-class suburb in the mid-19th
century when streets of small terraced houses were laid
out.
After the Second World War, many older terraces were
demolished and replaced by low-rise flats, modern terraces and
semi-detached pairs.
However, a large proportion of pre-1919 terraced houses have
survived, particularly in Balsall Heath.
The rate of owner occupation is 42%. Roughly 13% of homes are
rented from private landlords and 40% from the local authority
or housing associations. |
