The South Yardley council ward is in south-east Birmingham, roughly four miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the Nechells ward, the Sheldon ward, the Sparkbrook ward, the Springfield ward, the Acocks Green ward, the Bordesley Green ward, the Stechford & Yardley North ward and the Municipal Borough of Solihull.

The South Yardley ward contains the area of Hay Mills and parts of Tyseley, Yardley and Small Heath.

There are approximately 27,000 people resident in the South Yardley ward.

The population density is 40 persons per hectare compared to an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The average age is 39 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.

The white British population accounts for around 60% of all residents.

Approximately 23.5% of the population is of Asian origin with roughly 14% from Pakistan, 4.5% from Bangladesh and 4% from India.

Around 4.5% of the population is black, including 4% of Afro-Caribbean descent.

8.5% of residents are white non-British (including Irish), 2.5% are of mixed background and 1% are of Chinese origin or belong to some other ethnic group.

These estimates may differ from official census data which is now several years out of date and which was collated in respect of different ward boundaries.

The north side of the ward is characterised by interwar semi-detached pairs with a higher proportion of terraces towards the Coventry Road.

Higher density council estates were built after the Second World War, including three tower blocks at the Yew Tree Shopping Centre and one at the Swan Shopping Centre.

Tyseley on the east side of the ward, and Small Heath and Hay Mills on the west side, are characterised by small pre-1919 terraced houses.

The rate of owner occupation is 65%. Roughly 9% of homes are rented from private landlords and 24% from the local authority or housing associations.

The workless rate (economically inactive of working age) in the South Yardley ward is 20% compared to an average of around 20.2% for Birmingham as a whole.

South Yardley is one of forty wards in Birmingham that each elect three councillors. It is currently represented by Daphne Gaved (Liberal Democrat), Nawaz Ali (Labour) and David Willis (Liberal Democrat).

The South Yardley ward forms part of the Yardley constituency.

Nawaz Ali (Labour) 2975, David Osborne (Liberal Democrats) 2780, Albert Duffen (UKIP) 412, Sahar Rezazdeh (Conservative) 321, Rianne Ten Veen (Green) 194.

Labour Gain (from Liberal Democrats) with a majority of 195 and 44.26% of votes cast; 20,042 voters were registered; the turnout was 33.54%.

David Willis (Liberal Democrat) has represented South Yardley since May 2010; his current mandate will expire in 2014.

He is Vice-Chairman of the Health and Audits Committee and sits on the South Yardley Ward committee, the Yardley Constituency Committee and the Planning Committee.
