The South Yardley council ward is in south-east Birmingham,
roughly four miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the
Nechells ward, the
Sheldon ward, the
Sparkbrook ward, the
Springfield ward,
the Acocks Green ward,
the Bordesley
Green ward, the
Stechford & Yardley North ward and the Municipal Borough of
Solihull. The South Yardley ward contains the area of
Hay Mills and parts of
Tyseley,
Yardley and
Small Heath. |

There are approximately 27,000 people resident in the South
Yardley ward.
The population density is 40 persons per hectare
compared to an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The
average age is 39 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.
The white British population accounts for around 60% of all
residents.
Approximately 23.5% of the population is of Asian origin with
roughly 14% from Pakistan, 4.5% from Bangladesh and 4% from
India.
Around 4.5% of the population is black, including 4% of
Afro-Caribbean descent.
8.5% of residents are white non-British (including Irish),
2.5% are of mixed background and 1% are of Chinese origin or
belong to some other ethnic group.

now several years out of date and which was collated in respect
of different ward boundaries.

The north side of the ward is characterised by interwar
semi-detached pairs with a higher proportion of terraces towards
the Coventry Road.
Higher density council estates were built after the Second
World War, including three tower blocks at the Yew Tree Shopping
Centre and one at the Swan Shopping Centre.
Tyseley on the east side of the ward, and Small Heath and Hay
Mills on the west side, are characterised by small pre-1919
terraced houses.
The rate of owner occupation is 65%. Roughly 9% of homes are
rented from private landlords and 24% from the local authority
or housing associations. |

The workless rate (economically inactive of working age) in the
South Yardley ward is 20% compared to an average of around 20.2%

Specialist Computer Holdings (800), Virgin Media (500), Asda

Refrigeration (200), Delcam UK (software systems = 200), Peter
