The Soho council ward is in north-west Birmingham, roughly two miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the Aston ward, the Edgbaston ward, the Harborne ward, the Ladywood ward, the Handsworth Wood ward, the Lozells & East Handsworth ward and the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell.

The Soho ward contains the areas of Soho, Winson Green and part of Hockley.

Demographics: Soho Ward
 

There are approximately 26,000 people resident in the Soho ward.

The population density is roughly 49 persons per hectare compared to an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The average age is 34 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.

Approximately 46% of the population is of Asian origin with roughly 25% from India, 16% from Pakistan and 3% from Bangladesh.

Around 22.5% of the population is black, including 19% of Afro-Caribbean descent.

15% of residents are white British, 9% are white non-British (including Irish), 5% are of mixed background, and 2.5% are of Chinese origin or belong to some other ethnic group.

These estimates may differ from official census data which is now several years out of date and which was collated in respect of different ward boundaries.

Housing: Soho Ward
 
The housing stock mainly consists of small pre-1919 terraced houses. There are also patches of high density flats and maisonettes, particularly in Hockley where there are high-rise tower blocks.

Winson Green is characterised by short Victorian terraces with cramped rear yards and no front gardens. In Soho, the terraces are arranged in long unbroken chains with narrow backyards and small front gardens.

The ward also contains Edwardian semi-detached pairs, detached villas and modern terraces set in short closes.

The rate of owner occupation is around 49%. Roughly 14% of homes are rented from private landlords and 35% from the local authority or housing associations.

 
Economy: Soho Ward
 
The workless rate (economically inactive of working age) in the Soho ward is roughly 27% compared to an average of 20.2% for Birmingham as a whole.

63% of the ward is amongst the 5% most deprived areas in England; 82% is amongst the 10% most deprived areas in England; and 96% is amongst the 20% most deprived areas in England (how is deprivation measured?).  

The major employers are:

Sandwell & West Midlands NHS Trust (City Hospital = around 7,500 jobs), Travel West Midlands (330), West Midlands Homebased Care (200); Frank Dudley (metal pressings = 170), Benefits Agency (170), GET plc (manufacturer of cable accessories = 140), Eurovision (nursing agency = 150), BT (140).

Watt Street Recreation Ground, Bacchus Road Public Open Space, Ford Street Public Open Space, Moilliet Street Public Open Space, Norman Street Public Open Space, Wellington Street Public Open Space, New Spring Street Public Open Space and Great Western Public Open Space.

Soho is one of forty wards in Birmingham that each elect three councillors. It is currently represented by Dorothy Hargreaves (Labour), Chaman Lal (Labour) and Sybil Spence (Labour).

The Soho ward forms part of the Ladywood constituency.
