Soho Hill

Soho Hill is an area in Hockley, west Birmingham.

It is named after a mediaeval farmstead called South House which was purchased by pioneer industrialist, Mathew Boulton, in 1763.

He built one of the world's first modern factories, the Soho Manufactory, on the estate and linked it to the canal network via the Soho Loop.

The factory was demolished in the 1860's and replaced by St Michael's Church, the Black Eagle pub and an estate of small terraced houses, many of which have survived.

At around the same time, Hockley Port was built on the Soho Loop in order to ship cargo between the canal and the Great Western Railway.

The area remains largely industrial; however, the Soho Pool Wharf has been back-filled as a recreation ground and several Victorian factories and the Soho House Museum are now listed buildings forming part of the Lozells and Soho Hill Conservation Area.
