Overview Small Heath

Small Heath is in the Nechells ward, the Bordesley Green ward and the South Yardley ward in south-east Birmingham, two miles from the city centre. It is named after a small heath formerly at the junction of Green Lane and Coventry Road.

The surrounding areas are Bordesley, Bordesley Green, Greet, Hay Mills, Saltley, Sparkbrook, Tyseley and Yardley.

The River Cole, which drains through Small Heath, powered early industrial mills. The Birmingham and Warwick Canal, which reduced the distance to London by 60 miles, was cut through Small Heath in the 1790's and followed by the Great Western Railway in the 1850's.

These routes created an industrial corridor that was accompanied by large-scale urbanisation, particularly after BSA opened a vast munitions factory on Armoury Road in 1863.

Small Heath is still characterised by rows of pre-1919 terraced houses, some of which have been cleared and replaced by modern homes. However, the area has avoided wholescale redevelopment and remains essentially a Victorian suburb with only one residential tower.

Tilton Road runs alongside the east end of the stadium and the Camp Hill Railway Line runs alongside the west end.

This stand holds 17,000; there is rear executive seating and a VIP enclosure.

The oldest part of the ground is the Main Stand on the north touchline which was built in 1955 and can hold 5,500.
