Shenley is in the Weoley ward and the Bartley Green ward in south-west Birmingham, three miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Harborne, Weoley, Woodgate, Allens Cross, Bartley Green and Northfield Town. Shenley is a corruption of "scen leah" meaning bright clearing. The area remained rural until developed for housing between 1950 and 1980 by Birmingham City Council and the Bournville Village Trust. These estates include a mix of conventional low-rise housing with some maisonettes and high-rise flats at Shenley Fields. Green Meadow School Green Meadow School is a co-educational community primary school attended by roughly 420 children aged between four and eleven. This school was previously a community comprehensive that re-opened as an academy in September 2009. It is attended by around 1000 boys and girls aged between 11 and 18. Funding for new buildings was approved in August 2010 (News Archive 10/08/10). The old comprehensive was regarded as a failing school with poor examination results; only 25% of pupils passed five GCSE's including Maths and English at A*/C in 2009.
