Sheldon Area
Sheldon is in the Sheldon council ward in south-east Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Elmdon, Tile Cross, Wells Green and Yardley.
Sheldon is is a corruption of "scylf dun" which means "shelf hill". It is named after a ridge on the north side of the Westley Brook.
Sheldon was a village centred on the mediaeval church of Saint Giles until the 1930's when private semi-detached houses were laid out in avenues, crescents and circles running off the Coventry Road.
After the Second World War, a belt of council housing was constructed around the old village of Sheldon. However, large areas of open countryside were preserved as a municipal golf course and country park.
A linear commercial centre has evolved along the Coventry Road, particularly since the expansion of Birmingham Airport and the construction of the NEC in neighbouring Elmdon.

St Thomas More's is a Roman Catholic church at the junction of Sheaf Lane and Three Horseshoes Lane; it was designed in the "wigwam style" with a central tower and circular nave so that the entire congregation may receive Holy Communion together.

Old Rectory
Old Rectory Farm is on Ragley Drive, next to Saint Giles Church, at the south-west entrance to Sheldon Country Park.
It was once the home of Thomas Bray, a former Rector of Sheldon who was appointed Commissary of Maryland in 1696.
The Old Rectory is now a demonstration farm that specialises in traditional agricultural methods. It contains a broad range of livestock including chickens, geese ducks, ponies, pigs and Jersey cattle.
The Ranger Service is based at the farm which adjoins a picnic area and playground. Admission & parking are free.

Sheldon contains industrial units alongside the hi-speed A45 with easy access to Birmingham Airport, the NEC and the M42. There are also industrial zones off the Radleys alongside the West Coast Mainline on the north side of the airport runway.

Sheldon Country Park
Sheldon Country Park comprises 300 acres of mature and newly-planted woodland, wetland and meadow that straddles the canalised Westley Brook for roughly 1.2 miles from Saint Giles Church to Birmingham Airport.
The park adjoins the Hatchford Brook Golf Club and is skirted by the West Coast Mainline.
The landscape is relatively flat with broad pathways and cycle routes; it includes three football pitches and a new millennium woodland with 5 memorial trees planted by the Council of Sikh Gurdwara.
There is also a demonstration farm and visitors centre next to the main car park on Ragley Drive.
A new 55-space car park with access from Marston Green Railway Station opened in June 2010; it will serve as an overspill for the neighbouring 96-space park-and-ride (News Archive 05/06/10).
