The council ward of Shard End is in east Birmingham, roughly
five miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the
Hodge Hill ward, the
Sheldon ward, the
Stechford & Yardley North ward and the Metropolitan Borough
of Solihull. The Shard End ward contains the areas of
Shard End and
Kitts Green. |

There are approximately 26,000 people resident in the Shard
End ward.
The population density is roughly 39 persons per hectare
compared to an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The
average age is 43 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.
The white British population accounts for around 86% of
residents.
Approximately 2% of the population are of Asian origin with
roughly 1% from Pakistan and 0.5% from India.
Around 3.5% of the population is black, including 3% of
Afro-Caribbean descent.
5.5% of residents are white non-British (including Irish),
2.5% are of mixed background, and 0.5% are of Chinese origin or
belong to some other ethnic group.

now several years out of date and which was collated in respect
of different ward boundaries.

Most of the ward was developed for municipal housing after the
Second World War. The estates built between 1945 and 1960 are
generally arranged in geometric patterns and characterised by
terraces, bungalows and semi-detached pairs.
The density increased after 1960 with a greater proportion of
low-rise flats and nine residential towers.
The rate of owner occupation in the Shard End Ward is 50%.
Roughly 4% of homes are rented from private landlords and 42%
from the local authority or housing associations. |
