Overview Shard End

Shard End is in the Shard End council ward in east Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Kingshurst, Stechford, Castle Bromwich, Kitts Green and Hodge Hill.

Shard End formed part of Castle Bromwich Manor. Since sherd means gap or clearing, the name probably refers to a clearing at one end of the manor.

Shard End was still open countryside when acquired by Birmingham City Council in 1931. After the Second World War, the council laid out a geometric pattern of avenues, closes and crescents lined by terraced houses and semi-detached pairs with front and rear gardens.

Density increased in the 1960's when new terraces with smaller gardens, several blocks of low-rise flats and three residential towers were built. In the 1970's, part of the green corridor straddling the Cole Valley was developed as a network of terraced closes.

Shard End Griffins

There are six locally-listed stone griffins on Home Way and Kendrick Avenue.

The Griffins, which were apparently a gift from the Tsar of Russia, stood on the roof of the original Lewis department store on Corporation Street until it was demolished in the 1920's.

They were then placed outside the entrance to Yorkswood Scout Camp in Shard End which was redeveloped as housing in the 1970's.
