Shard End is in the Shard End council ward in east Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Kingshurst, Stechford, Castle Bromwich, Kitts Green and Hodge Hill. Shard End formed part of Castle Bromwich Manor. Since sherd means gap or clearing, the name probably refers to a clearing at one end of the manor. Shard End was still open countryside when acquired by Birmingham City Council in 1931. After the Second World War, the council laid out a geometric pattern of avenues, closes and crescents lined by terraced houses and semi-detached pairs with front and rear gardens. Density increased in the 1960's when new terraces with smaller gardens, several blocks of low-rise flats and three residential towers were built. In the 1970's, part of the green corridor straddling the Cole Valley was developed as a network of terraced closes. Travellers Camp off Lea Ford Road In April 2010, Birmingham City Council considered redeveloping a former sewage works off Lea Ford Road as an official traveller's encampment with 29 pitches (News Archive 29/04/10). However, these plans were abandoned in June 2010 due to budgetary constraints (News Archive 16/06/10). In February 2010, plans were submitted for a new urban village on Ownall Road. Its centrepiece will be a rainbow-coloured community library, shaped like a shard of glass. The development will also include 191 flats and houses and a new market square and retail boulevard (News Archive 19/02/10) The project became increasingly controversial after it emerged that shop rents might increase by up to 300% and that the existing retail parade on Shard End Crescent will close (News Archive 01/04/10). Work began in December 2010 (News Archive 02/12/10). The co-op will open an anchor store at the new development (News Archive 03/04/11). In April 2011, local residents protested against the closure of the long-established family-run Save and Save supermarket on the soon-to-be-demolished Shard End Crescent. Its owners were refused a unit at the new Shard End Urban Village because their business is too similar to the Co-Op anchor store (News Headlines 01/05/11).
