Selly Park is in the Selly Oak council ward in south-west Birmingham, two miles from the city centre. It was built on parkland owned by Selly Manor. The surrounding areas are Bournbrook, Calthorpe, Stirchley, Selly Oak, Moseley Village and University. Selly Park was developed as a gentrified suburb in the late 18th century. Purchasers of freehold property had to sign covenants regarding the structure and appearance of their homes and could not buy individual plots of less than one quarter acre. Consequently, Selly Park contains a large number of listed Victorian and Georgian mansions, particularly on the Pershore Road, many of which are now offices.
