Saltley is in the Washwood Heath ward in east Birmingham, two miles from the city centre. Saltley is a corruption of "sealuht leah" meaning "willow clearing". The surrounding areas are Bordesley, Bordesley Green, Duddeston, Nechells, Alum Rock, Small Heath, Ward End and Washwood Heath. The Saltley estate was a sub-manor of Aston acquired by the Adderley family in 1643. It became an industrial suburb in the mid-19th century when engineering yards were built alongside the newly-completed Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway. The pace of industrialisation accelerated in the 1880's when vast gasworks were built and new brickworks provided the materials for Birmingham's urban expansion. Long straight rows of small terraced houses were laid out and Saltley was annexed by Birmingham in 1891. It used to be said that: "Saltley is run on rails, powered on gas and built with bricks". The area is still characterised by Victorian terraces although most of the engineering yards closed in the 1980's and have been replaced by modern business parks. Accident Blackspots in Saltley

It is named after Charles Adderley who donated the land. He also built a free library in the park which was demolished in 1966. The park contains meadows, tree clusters, landscaped walkways, cricket nets, play areas and hardcourts. City of Birmingham Stadium The City of Birmingham Stadium is a proposed regeneration project that could be built on the current site of the Wheels Adventure Park in Saltley. The original plan was to build a new national football stadium on this site; the proposed stadium would have been the centrepiece of a new sports village with a supercasino, leisure park, soccer dome, Olympic pool, hotel, retail and residential units. However, these proposals were scaled down after the national football stadium stayed at Wembley and plans for the sports village were stymied by objections to the supercasino. The proposal was then changed to a 55,000-seat stadium as the new joint home of Birmingham City FC and Warwickshire Cricket Club. However, Warwickshire Cricket Club is now rebuilding its existing ground and Birmingham City FC is under new ownership. It is therefore uncertain to what extent they remain interested in the project. However, it does seem that 80 acres of development land are available and that the council is committed to the sports-led regeneration of derelict industrial estate in Saltley.
