Rubery is in the Longbridge ward in south-west Birmingham, six miles from the city centre. It is named after Rubery Hill which is one of the Lickey Hills. Rubery is a corruption of "ruh beorg" which means uncultivated hill. The surrounding areas are Chadwich, Lickey, Longbridge, Rednal, Allens Cross and New Frankley. A psychiatric hospital was built on Rubery Hill in the 1870's, but otherwise the area remained rural until after 1945 when the council built several housing estates, mainly of short terraces and semi-detached pairs. A small commercial centre evolved on New Road on the south side of the A38. Rubery Hill Hospital closed in 1993 whereupon the campus and surrounding area were regenerated as a mixed-use development known as Rubery Great Park which contains over one thousand privately-built homes set in landscaped parkland.
