Saint-Martins-in-the-Bullring was built in the late 13th century but little remains of the original church; the tower and spire were restored in 1835 and the remainder rebuilt in sandstone in the 1870's by the Victorian architect J.A.Chatwin.

The church features an extended nave and chancel, transepts and a hammer-beam roof. The south transept contains a window by Burne-Jones whilst the West Window is a reproduction of an original by Hardman destroyed in the Birmingham Blitz.

The Guild Chapel possesses Birmingham's oldest monument: a sandstone effigy of Sir William Bermingham (1325). The Victorian choir stalls were constructed from the beams of the mediaeval church & the Prayer Chapel contains a rising-flame sculpture that symbolises the soul's journey to Salvation.

Public Squares in the Retail Quarter

Old Square

Old Square is located at the junction of Corporation Street and Priory Queensway on the former site of the Priory of Saint Thomas the Apostle which was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1547.

The plot remained derelict until the early 1700's when the square was created as the centrepiece of the Priory Housing Estate which was demolished in the 1880's to make room for Corporation Street: a broad urban boulevard in the Haussman-style.

The area was transformed again in the 1960's when Priory Queensway was built as a high-speed dual carriageway on either side of Old Square which then became a sunken traffic island, criss-crossed by pedestrian subways, and decorated by Kenneth Budd's Old Square Mural (1967).

The square was revamped in the early 2000's when its pedestrian routes were raised to surface level, new greenery was planted, decorative railings were installed and the Hancock Memorial (1996) became its centrepiece.

Rotunda Square

Rotunda Square is a pedestrian piazza at the entrance to the Bullring shopping malls by the junction of New Street and High Street.

It was created by removing the Inner Ring Road so that pedestrians no longer have to walk through concrete underpasses in order to reach the Bullring from the city centre.

The square also provides a setting for the Rotunda and features the Guardian Bull, a life-size sculpture of a turning Hereford Bull, and the Light Wands: three carbon-fibre masts with a height of 30, 25 and 20 metres which mediate the impact of the Rotunda.

St Martin's Square

Saint Martins Square.Image copyright Tom Pullman. Image published under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic License

Saint Martins Square provides pedestrian access from the markets & Digbeth High Street to the rear entrance of the Bullring shopping malls beneath the Birmingham Ridge.

The malls are built into the ridge so that third floor level in St Martins Square at the bottom is at ground floor level on Rotunda Square at the top.

A central boulevard, which divides the malls on the top of the ridge, terminates by the Nelson Memorial; pedestrians can then descend via a series of terraces to St Martins Square at the bottom.

These terraces are constructed in hard French limestone and unified by evergreen hedges, mature pine trees and street furniture; one of the terraces, which commands views of the Warwickshire Plain, contains a Costa Coffee cafe with a spiral design resembling a snail's shell.

Saint Martin's Square, which is paved in herring-bone granite, also provides a setting for Saint Martin's Church: the historic parish church of Birmingham.

The sandstone church, which has been cleansed of industrial filth, is set amidst low-growing shrubs, that mediate the transition from the granite of St Martin's Square.

The square also contains three cube fountains that soften the contrast between the spiral cafe and limestone terraces above, and the granite paving below.

Railways in the Retail Quarter

Overview

Two railways run through the Retail Quarter: the West Coast Mainline and the Leamington-Worcester Line; these lines pass within 30 metres of each other but run on different track alignments.

The Leamington-Worcester Line travels above a tunnel carrying the West Coast Mainline; there is no junction; the lines were built by competing companies.

There is one station in the Retail Quarter: Moor Street, which is next to the Bullring; however, New Street Station can be reached via the Pallasades Retail Mall in the Retail Quarter.

West Coast Mainline

The West Coast Mainline runs through the Retail Quarter, travelling in a cutting beneath Park Street before entering a tunnel that carries it beneath the Leamington-Worcester Railway, Moor Street Ringway and Rotunda Square; it emerges at the eastern entrance to New Street Station in Southside.

Links: West Coast Mainline

Leamington-Worcester Line

From Allison Street in Digbeth, the Leamington-Worcester Line continues on an embankment above Park Street before arriving at Moor Street Station, next to the Bull Ring.

From Moor Street, the line continues north-westwards through Snow Hill Tunnel which carries it beneath Birmingham High Street, Martineau Square, Corporation Street, Temple Row and the Great Western Arcade; the line then emerges at Snow Hill Station on Colmore Row in the Business Quarter.

Links: Leamington-Worcester Line

Moor Street Station

Birmingham Moor Street Station. Image released into the public domain by its creator G-Man

Moor Street on the Leamington-Worcester Line was built by the Great Western in 1909-1914 as its second Birmingham terminus because the company's first terminus at Snow Hill in the Business Quarter was becoming increasingly difficult to reach via the congested Snow Hill Tunnel.

Eventually, Snow Hill Station was closed, and Moor Street became the only Great Western terminus in Birmingham. However, this meant that passengers arriving from towns such as Shirley on the east side of Birmingham could not continue to destinations such as Stourbridge and Worcester on the west side without alighting at Moor Street and walking to New Street.

Moreover, office workers commuting from suburbs such as Solihull could not easily reach the Business Quarter, but had to alight at Moor Street and either catch a bus or walk the final mile.

In order to solve these difficulties, Snow Hill Station was re-opened in 1986 whereupon Moor Street Station ceased to be a terminus and became a through station. The old terminus buildings were converted into a shopping arcade and two through platforms were built on a new track alignment.

The new Moor Street Station has an annual passenger footfall of 650,000; it is equipped with a seated area, waiting rooms, baby changing, CCTV, toilets, cycle storage, shops and refreshment booths.

The rebuild, which preserved listed buildings and many original features, won the Railway Heritage Trust Award 2004 and the Birmingham Civic Society Renaissance Award 2005.

Moor Street does not have a taxi rank or car park; nor is there any direct rail service between Moor Street and New Street; however, both these stations are linked to each other and to the Bull Ring via pedestrian subways.

Main Destinations: Birmingham Snow Hill, Dorridge, Kidderminster, London Marylebone, Shirley, Stourbridge Junction, Stratford-upon-Avon, Worcester Foregate Street.

The Transport Secretary Lord Adonis announced in January 2010 that improvements would be made to the Birmingham-Marylebone Chiltern Line.

In particular, Moor Street would be upgraded as the new terminus of the Chiltern Line and overall journey times would be cut by 20 minutes to one hour forty minutes  (News Archive 20/01/10).

Retail Malls in the Retail Quarter

Bull Ring Shopping Centre

The Bullring is the most visited shopping centre in the UK with an annual footfall of 37 million.

The old Bullring was redeveloped in 2003 when the inner ring road, which divided it from the city centre, was removed and replaced by an attractive pedestrian piazza known as Rotunda Square.

This means that shoppers can now walk to the Bullring from the High Street and New Street without having to pass through concrete underpasses.

The two malls, East and West, are built into the Birmingham Ridge: an escarpment with a steep descent to Digbeth High Street, 15 metres below.

An aluminium-studded Selfridges store is at the far end of the East Mall and a flagship Debenhams Store is at the far end of the West Mall.

Since the malls are built into the Birmingham Ridge, the ground floor units at the top of the ridge are at the same level as the 3rd floor units at the bottom.

A central boulevard, which divides the malls on top of the ridge, terminates at the Nelson Memorial; from there, shoppers can descend via a series of terraces to St Martin's Square.

The square provides access to the rear entrance of the malls from the retail markets and Digbeth High Street.

Old Moor Street Railway Station was built in brick with terracotta dressings in 1909; it features 5 curved stone gables above a single-storey entrance range that contains 6 glazed-bar roundrels.

Old Moor Street was built as a terminus to relieve pressure on Snow Hill Station. Trains arriving on the east side of the city centre could terminate at Moor Street and thereby avoid the underground tunnel to Snow Hill Station on the west side of the city centre.

Snow Hill Station closed in the 1960's but reopened in 1986 whereupon Moor Street was rebuilt as a through station on a new cross city line. The old terminus building was, however, preserved as retail units and a booking hall.
