Rednal is in the Longbridge ward in south-west Birmingham, six miles from the city centre. Rednal is a corruption of "reodan" which means thicket in old English. It was once covered by ancient woodland, patches of which have survived in the Lickey Hills. The surrounding areas are Longbridge, Rubery and Lickey. Rednal Hill is the location of a Roman Catholic Retreat attached to the Birmingham Oratory. Its northern slope was developed as a municipal housing estate in the early 1950's. This estate contains around seven hundred homes, mainly short terraces and semi-detached pairs laid out on long streets. Some of these homes require refurbishment. It consists of 524 acres of woodland, wetland, meadow and open water and includes Beacon Hill, Bilberry Hill, Cofton Hill, Pinfield Wood, Lickey Warren, Rose Hill and Rednal Hill. The park contains a golf course, pond, sculpture trail, tennis courts, putting green, bowling green and the Old Rose and Crown Hotel. It was originally a royal hunting ground purchased by the Ist Earl of Plymouth in 1682. The estate was sold off in the late 19th century when George Cadbury bought Rose Hill which he later donated to the City of Birmingham. The park is rich in flora and fauna with over 400 types of flowering plants, 30 species of moss and 17 of fern. The birdlife includes great tits, blue tits, chaffinch, tree pipits, willow warblers, fieldfare, redwing and robins. Swans, mallard, coot, moorhen and Canadian geese inhabit the open water. There are vast numbers of rabbits on the hills and pigeons, lizards, adders and grey squirrels in the woods which consist of spruce, pine and deciduous broad-leaved varieties. The park commands spectacular views of Birmingham and the surrounding countryside, particularly from the summit of Beacon Hill which features a viewing platform and toposcope. There are three car parks: one on Warren Lane next to visitor centre, a second off Monument Lane on Beacon Hill and a third on Rose Hill by the Old Rose and Crown, bowling green and golf course.
