Quinton is in the Quinton council ward in south-west Birmingham, three miles from the city centre. The name is a corruption of "cwens tun" which means queen's farm, i.e. a farm owned by a woman. The surrounding areas are Harborne, Woodgate, West Quinton and Warley. During the 19th century, Quinton grew from a hamlet into a sizeable village centred on Christ Church. Many Victorian terraced houses have survived in and around Quinton High Street. However, Quinton was separated from Harborne by a belt of countryside known as Ridgeacre and did not officially became part of Birmingham until 1909. After the First World War, Ridgeacre was developed as a municipal housing estate characterised by well-built semi-detached pairs and low-density terraces. High-density council estates were built on the remaining farmland in the 1960's. These included four blocks of high-rise flats at Welsh Farm. The following bus routes run through Quinton: 9, 10, 10H, 39, 126, 126A, 140, 140A, 141, 141A, 192, 202, 204 Hagley Road West/Birch Lane A female motorist in her seventies sustained neck, back and chest injuries after crashing into a garden wall on the corner of Birch Lane and Hagley Road West at around 1:30pm on Friday 24/09/10 (News Archive 24/09/10).
