The Perry Barr council ward is in north-west Birmingham, roughly
three miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the
Aston ward, the
Kingstanding ward,
the Nechells ward, the
Oscott ward, the
Stockland Green ward,
the Handsworth Wood
ward, the
Lozells
& East Handsworth ward and the Metropolitan Borough of
Sandwell. The Perry Barr ward contains the areas of
Perry Barr,
Witton and parts of
Perry Beeches and
Hamstead. |

There are approximately 25,000 people resident in the Perry
Barr ward.
The population density is 29 persons per hectare compared to
an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The average
age is 38 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.
The white British population accounts for around 62% of all
residents.
Approximately 17% of the population is of Asian origin with
roughly 8% from India, 5.5% from Pakistan and 1.5% from
Bangladesh.
Around 9% of the population is black, including 7.5% of
Afro-Caribbean descent.
8.5% of residents are white non-British (including Irish),
2.5% are of mixed background, and 1% are of Chinese origin or
belong to some other ethnic group.

now several years out of date and which was collated in respect
of different ward boundaries.

The housing at Witton on the south side of the
ward mainly consists of pre-1919 terraces with some larger
semi-detached homes. The area around the River Tame,
particularly Brookvale Road, is prone to flooding. Some terraces
are particularly close to industrial zones. Perry Beeches on
the north side of the ward was first developed in the
1930's. The housing here mainly consists of interwar terraces
and semi-detached pairs arranged in neat avenues and crescents:
a pattern repeated in Perry Barr itself.
The rate of owner occupation is around
81%. Roughly 7% of homes are rented from private landlords and
11% from the local authority or housing associations. |

The workless rate (economically inactive of working age) in the
Perry Barr ward is roughly 12% compared to an average of 20.2%

400), West Midlands Motorway Police (220), IMI Components
(manufacturer of high precision components = 200).
