Perry Barr is in the Perry Barr council ward in north Birmingham, three miles from the city centre. The neighbouring areas are Hamstead, Witton, Handsworth Wood, Wyrley Birch, Perry Beeches, Old Oscott and Kingstanding. Perry is derived from the old English pirige which means pear tree whilst barr is a Celtic word meaning hilltop. Perry Barr therefore means a hill planted with pear trees. The hill in question was the high ground above the River Tame. Perry Manor was acquired by the Gough-Calthorpe family in the early 1600's. The area remained rural until the Grand Junction Railway opened in 1837 and the Tame Valley Canal was completed in 1844. These routes prompted industrial development in the Holdford area of Perry Barr where several mills powered by the River Tame were already located. Industrialisation was accompanied by ribbon development along the major traffic routes and Perry Barr became an urban district in 1894. However, major housing developments were delayed until Perry Barr was annexed by Birmingham in 1928. After Perry Hall Manor was sold in the 1950's, the area adjoining Perry Park was developed as a private estate of large semi-detached houses with generous front and rear gardens. A commercial centre evolved at the junction of the Walsall Road (A34) and Aldridge Road (A452) and the adjoining site was developed as the City North Campus of Birmingham Polytechnic (now Birmingham City University).
