Northfield Area
Northfield Town is in the Northfield ward in south-west Birmingham, six miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Cotteridge, Shenley, Weoley, Wychall, Allens Cross and Turves Green.
Northfield is a corruption of "nord feld", so-called because it was the northernmost Saxon settlement in the fifth century when Celtic tribes, who were later driven into Wales, temporarily blocked the Anglo-Saxon invasion of the West Midlands.
Northfield is recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as a prosperous manor centred on the church of Saint Laurence. The village, now a conservation area, was still rural in 1850.
There were however industrial mills on the River Rea and some ribbon development on the Bristol Road. After Northfield Railway Station opened in 1869, a commercial centre evolved at the junction of Bristol Road and Church Road.
Northfield was annexed by Birmingham in 1911 and most of the remaining green spaces were enclosed by a belt of suburban housing after the First World War.

Man Dies After Attack on Wychall Road
A 57-year-old man died of injuries sustained in a street attack on Wychall Road at 1.30am on 5/12/09 (News Archive 6/12/09).
In March 2011, a 17-year-old youth and two men aged 20 and 23 were sentenced to life imprisonment for his murder and a 20-year-old woman, who joined in the attack, was sentenced to 3.5 years for grievous bodily harm (News Archive 10/03/11)

St Laurence's
Saint Laurence's stands on Church Hill in Northfield; it is mediaeval in origin and was built in locally-quarried grey sandstone. The oldest parts are the base of the tower, the pillars of the chancel arch & the north nave doorway which all date from around 1170.
The nave & chancel were added in the 13th century; the south aisle in the 14th century and the south porch in the 15th century; the north aisle was built in 1900.
The middle section of the tower dates from the 13th century and the upper section from the 15th century.
There are two 11th century animal heads on the south wall of the tower and two on the north wall; they are corbels, probably taken from an earlier church.

Royal Orthopaedic Hospital
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital on Bristol Road South was established in 1817; it received a royal warrant from Queen Victoria in 1888; the present campus, a mansion called Woodlands, was once the home of George Cadbury; it was donated by the Cadbury family in 1909.
The hospital, which is managed by the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, specialises in elective orthopaedic surgery and is a major regional centre for routine orthopaedic, spinal and bone tumour surgery.
The partial redevelopment of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital began in November 2009. Work will involve the construction of a new outpatients department, additional parking and a new entrance.

Manor Farm Park
Manor Farm Park is a 50 acre open space with woodlands, wetlands, meadows, play areas, nature trails and a wildlife corridor.
The park also contains a lake that was created by damming Griffins Brook and a wooden barn built as a picnic area for visiting schoolchildren in 1894.
The park was once the grounds of Manor House: a Georgian mansion once owned by the Cadbury family. Both the house and grounds were donated to the city of Birmingham in 1951.
Victoria Park

Northfield Railway Station
Northfield Railway Station on the Cross City Line has an annual passenger footfall of roughly 310,000; it is equipped with two platforms, a seated area, toilets and a 205-space car park, free for railway users.
The station is on Quarry Lane, around 200 metres from Bristol Road South. There is no taxi rank but bus routes 27 and 44 pass nearby. The station first opened in 1870 but was substantially rebuilt in 1978; it features a disused island platform with sculptures carved from old sleepers.
Trains for New Street generally stop every 10 minutes during weekdays, every 20 minutes on Saturdays and weekday evenings, and every 30 minutes on Sundays.

at the intersection of Bristol Road South and the Outer Circle (A4040).This crossroads was formerly a congestion blackspot on the A38; however the A38 now bypasses the centre of Northfield thanks to Ulwine Drive, a relief road that has significantly reduced congestion.
Northfield has a large retail mall called the Northfield Shopping Centre with several major chainstores including Greggs, Wilkinsons, WH Smith and Dorothy Perkins.

The Northfield Conservation Area
The Northfield Conservation Zone contains the old village which is roughly one quarter of a mile from the modern town centre.
The designated area is centred on Saint Laurence's Church and includes a Victorian church school, a half-timbered brick barn, a mediaeval pound that contains a glacial erratic, a pub called the Great Stone Inn, named after the erratic, several substantial Victorian villas, and two rows of 19th century nailmakers' cottages.
