New Oscott is in the Sutton Vesey ward in north Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Banners Gate, Boldmere, Kingstanding, Short Heath, Sutton Park and Wyrley Birch. The area is called New Oscott because a Roman Catholic seminary, which had been based on Old Oscott Hill, moved there in 1837. New Oscott was rural until the 1930's when the first housing estates were built. The area is characterised by suburban semi-detached pairs, mainly built between 1930 and 1960. There is a commercial centre at the junction of Chester Road and College Road that includes the Blind Beggar Pub, a Tesco Superstore and the Princess Alice Retail Park which was once the site of a Victorian orphanage. New Oscott Retirement Village New Oscott Retirement Village was built in 2010 on Fosseway Drive off the Chester Road. It contains 254 one and two bedroom flats and a garden, lounge, bar, restaurant, swimming pool, jacuzzi, cafe, shop, laundry, library and hairdressing salon. Universities and Colleges in New Oscott St Mary's College St Mary's College is a Roman Catholic seminary on the Chester Road. It was founded on Old Oscott Hill in 1794 but moved to its current premises in 1838.
