Overview New Hall

New Hall is in the Sutton Trinity ward and the Sutton New Hall ward in north-east Birmingham, six miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Reddicap, Walmley, Wylde Green and Sutton Coldfield Town.

New Hall is named after a moated manor house, now a hotel, which dates back to the 12th century. The manorial farmland was centred on Plants Brook which drains south-eastwards, through New Hall Valley, from Sutton Park to the River Tame.

New Hall remained rural until the 1970's when the Thimble End housing estate was built on part of the manorial farmland. After the manor became a hotel in 1988, another slice of farmland, on the west side of Walmley Road, was developed as detached housing.

The remaining farmland was preserved as the New Hall Valley Country Park which forms part of a green corridor between Pype Hayes and Sutton Park.

New Hall Mill in New Hall Valley Country Park is only one of two working water mills that have survived in Birmingham. The other is Sarehole Mill in Hall Green.

New Hall Mill was built on the foundations of a mediaeval mill in the mid-18th century. Water from Plantsbrook was channelled into the millpond via a leat which has since silted-up; an external overshot wheel operates two millstones for grinding corn.

The mill is managed by a registered charity which operates the machinery on open days.

New Hall Manor

New Hall Manor is on Walmley Road; it consists of an L-shaped mediaeval hall that was built as a hunting lodge for the Earl of Warwick in 1300; a matching L-shaped Tudor wing was constructed in 1590 and a rear Jacobean wing in 1620.

A tower and battlements in the Early English Style were added to the rear wing in 1796 and the hall was partially rebuilt as a Gothic Revival mansion in 1869.

The original mediaeval and Tudor banqueting halls have survived; the interior also features a magnificent newell staircase watched over by heraldic beats. The grounds contain a chapel, cottage, stables and coach house; the manor is surrounded by a moat.

Under the feudal system, the house was owned by the Earls of Warwick but inhabited by local gentry who managed the estate on their behalf. It was purchased by a merchant, Thomas Gibbons, in 1552 and then passed through a series of private owners terminating in the industrialist Sir Alfred Owen (1909-1975). It is now a country house hotel.
