Housing: Nechells Ward |
|
|
|
The Nechells ward contains some pre-1919 terraces and interwar
semi-detached pairs; however, most of the older stock, including
all the Victorian back-to-back terraces, was demolished from the
1920's onwards.
These homes were replaced by high-density inner-city estates,
mainly consisting of terraced houses, low-rise flats and
residential towers.
Some of these estates have since been rebuilt as lower
density urban villages with the inclusion of more green spaces,
the demolition of some towers and the introduction of private
detached and semi-detached housing.
The ward also contains numerous apartment blocks, many of
which are converted offices and/or industrial estate; student
villages have been built in Eastside, particularly at Aston
University.
The rate of owner occupation is around 20%. Roughly 4% of
homes are rented from private landlords and around 75% from the
local authority or housing associations. |
