Moseley Village is in the Moseley & Kings Heath ward in south Birmingham, two miles from the city centre. The name is derived from the old English "moss ley" which means a mossy field or pasture. The surrounding areas are Calthorpe, Balsall Heath, Moor Green, Selly Park and Wake Green. Moseley was a mediaeval village centred on Moseley Hall and Saint Mary's Church. It remained rural until the mid-19th century when ribbon development appeared along the Alcester Road, mainly in the form of large mansions set in spacious grounds. After Moseley Railway Station opened in 1867 and the Moseley Hall Estate was released for development, new streets were laid, and a commercial centre evolved at the junction of Alcester Road, Saint Mary's Row and Salisbury Road. Moseley Village fell into decay after 1945, mainly because its Victorian mansions were too large for modern living and so were sub-divided into flats and bedsits. However, the area has recently enjoyed a renaissance as the new Bohemian Quarter of Birmingham characterised by art galleries, continental cafes, speciality boutiques, fashionables bars and live music venues. Saint Mary's was originally built in the 15th century; the west tower was added in the 16th century. The church was, however, completely transformed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it was rebuilt in the Decorated Style by J.A. Chatwin and his son P.B. Chatwin. J.A. Chatwin added the north aisle in 1886, the side chapel in 1897, and the crenellations and pinnacles on the west tower in 1898; P.B. Chatwin rebuilt the nave and south aisle in 1910; the Victorian additions are built in brick and only faced with stone. In January 2010, plans were submitted for 42 solar roof panels capable of generating 8,000 kw of electricity annually. Critics argued that the panels would be an unsuitable addition to such an historic building (News Archive 30/01/10). The plans were approved on appeal to an inspector in September 2010 and the church was given permission to go ahead with the installation by the Chancellor of the Diocese of Birmingham in March 2011 (News Archive 10/03/11) T 0121 449 2243 Address: St Mary's Row B13 8HW Links: Landmark Churches St Mary's WebsiteSt Anne's St Anne's stands on Park Hill in Moseley Village; it is a neo-Gothic church designed by Frederick Preedy and built in stone in 1870-73. The Golden Lion is a two-storey half-timbered Tudor inn dating from around 1520. It once stood on High Street Deritend but was dismantled and reassembled in Cannon Hill Park by the Birmingham Archaeological Society in 1910. The timber frame is filled with plaster and the ground floor faced in brick. The three-gabled facade features herring-bone studding, a painted pub sign (1725), two rows of early 18th century casement windows and two 18th century bay windows. Links: Secular Listed Buildings Moseley Hall Moseley Hall is a Georgian mansion on the Alcester Road that was built in 1795 by button manufacturer John Taylor after an older house on the same site had been destroyed during the Priestley Riots of 1791. The hall, which was built in ashlar, features a rusticated ground floor and slate roof. It is entered through a fabulous Tuscan porch supported by four sets of double columns. The hall was acquired by Richard Cadbury in 1884: he donated it to the city for use as a children's home; it is now a geriatric hospital. The Moseley side of the park features tennis courts, putting greens, bowling greens, a small car park off the Alcester Road, the Sons of Rest Social Club, an 18th century stucco mansion known as Cannon Hill House and a Tudor inn called the Golden Lion that once stood in Digbeth. The fifth Taste of Birmingham was held in the park in July 2010 (Festivals in Brum). The tenth Birmingham Eid Mela was celebrated in the park in September 2010 (Festivals in Brum). Moseley Hall Park The grounds of Moseley Hall were landscaped by Humphrey Repton in the late 18th century when the hall was rebuilt by button manufacturer John Taylor. The area to the north of Salisbury Road became Moseley Hall Park after the estate was sold-off and partially developed for housing. The park contains an 18th century ice house and 3.5 acre pool; it slopes north-westwards from Moseley Hall towards the Rea Valley. Moseley Hall Park is privately owned by a trust company; the gates are kept locked, but keys are available on payment of an annual membership fee and deposit. The Moseley Folk Festival is held there in September (Festivals in Brum).

This application was opposed, particularly by small traders. In November 2010, the Planning Committee announced that it would hold a public consultation meeting (News Archive 07/11/10). This meeting was held at St Columba's Church Hall in December 2010. Over 200 people attended, most of whom objected to the proposed Tesco store. The Planning Committee decided to investigate the likely impact on local traffic flows before deciding whether to grant the application (News Archive 13/12/10) After receiving a petition signed by over 1,700 residents, the Planning Committee rejected the application in February 2011 because of the likelihood of increased traffic congestion and the lack of parking spaces (News Archive 12/02/11). This decision was reversed in March 2011 after the Planning Committee had been advised that the evidence did not support their grounds for refusing the application (News Archive 04/03/11) Work will begin on clearing the site in August 2011. This will take around 6 months and will be followed by the construction of the medical centre which will be occupied by Wake Green Surgery; the developers will then begin work on the Tesco store and 14 sheltered flats (News Headlines 26/05/11). Moseley Conservation Area is centred on the junction of Alcester Road, Salisbury Road and Saint Mary's Row. It includes the mediaeval church of Saint Mary's, the Victorian Gothic Revival church of Saint Anne, Moseley Hall, and its landscaped grounds, part of which are now a private park, the red-brick Fighting Cocks Pub and other 19th century buildings.
