Minworth is in the Sutton New Hall ward in north-east Birmingham, five miles from the city centre. The name is a corruption of "mynna's worth" meaning the homestead owned by Mynna. The surrounding areas are Curdworth, Tyburn, Castle Vale, New Hall, Pype Hayes, Shard End and Water Orton. In 1900, Minworth was still a rural village centred on Minworth Green on the north bank of the River Tame which powered an industrial mill. The Birmingham and Fazeley Canal, which was cut in the 1790's, descends 4.5 metres through the Minworth Flight. Minworth changed after it was chosen as the site of vast sewage works in the early 1900's. All of Birmingham's sewage is now piped by gravitational force to Minworth where it is treated by bacterial filtration. The sewage farm extended the industrial corridor that had evolved alongside the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and Minworth Mill was demolished and replaced by trading estates. A small estate of terraced and semi-detached houses was built on the Kingsbury Road between 1930 and 1960, but the rest of Minworth is still surrounded by open fields.
