Overview Metchley

Metchley is in the Edgbaston ward in south-west Birmingham, two miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Calthorpe, Harborne, University, Chad Valley and Selly Oak

Metchley is a derivation of the Anglo-Saxon  "micel gehaeg" which means large enclosed field. It is the site of a Roman marching fort dating from around AD50 that was probably located on Icknield Street which connected Gloucestershire to South Yorkshire.

In 1900 Metchley was still enclosed farmland that formed part of a country estate centred on a Gothic manor, Metchley Abbey (circa 1820), which is now retirement flats.

Part of the Metchley Estate was developed as suburban detached housing in the early 1900's. The remainder was developed as a series of hospital campuses from the 1930's onwards. The latest of these, the Birmingham Super Hospital, will be completed in June 2010.
